front end how to tell

Hey all looking for some help with my front end on a 2001 dodge 2500 diesel...
The front drivers side makes a squeek/sorta grind when I turn the wheels .I went under there and put my finger on the lower ball joint ,had a bud move the steering and the sound makes the ball joint shutter(like vibration ). When i put the truck on a jack there is no UP,DOWN.LEFT.RIGHT movment. What is a sure way to check the ball joint (In the driveway) and how long are they bad before you are screwed??

Any Info would be GREAT,
Thanks ,Redz

Jack it up and try to raise the wheel with a 2x6 or flat bar and watch the lower ball joint for any movement. It doesn't take much to be shot. Watch for the little silver ring to disappear upwards into the dust boot.

A grinding noise doesn't sound like a ball joint though, more like a u-joint or bearing!

front end

Thanks for the info I will try the 2x6 thing . It's more of a creeking sound,,
I don't see any dust boot .I have tryed to use a needle greaser to grease it and there is no boot on the lower joint.

Thanks,Redz
