front axel seal nightmare
i bought two pass side seals today just to be safe. old one was leaking out of the tube onto the wheel. read directions on here and had a good idea how to do it beforehand. two ruined seals later i had to take both right side axels out and remove the outer right u joint just so that i could drive the truck. i used a 1/2 three ft piece of all thread with a seal driver on the inside. both times the seal pulled in crooked and ruined the seal. any suggestions? by the way, no dealer in my area has the seals. i will have to wait untill next week.
thanks

I have the same seal leaking. I have replaced the inner seals in the past on front axles that didn't have a CAD. If the CAD doesn't get in the way then follow these directions.
Both sides will have to be tore down completly inluding dropping the carrier. When you install the seal use a old wooden broom handle coming into the axle tube on the drivers side (takes two people to do this) the second person places the seal in place and directs the broom stick into place onto the seal driver while the first person taps the broom with a hammer until seal is in place. Vice versa for seal on the oppisite side. Don't know what to torque the carrier brg strap bolts to.

broom handle would have to be pretty long. the problem i was having was keeping the seal driving straight. it wants to **** up or down very eaisly. also, new problem, as i was looking at it outside tonight, i noticed that there is a coolant leak coming from the pass side of the engine block. looks like from the plate/housing that the oil filter screws on. great!!!!!more problems.

Is it slipping on the seal driver or is the seal driver slipping on the seal?? If its the seal driver find some of that friction tape. If its slipping on the seal change out and use a big socket.

DTR's 'Go to Guy'
This may sound totally uncouth, but I have ground a slight angle on the starting edge of the seals before to help get them started. Been there and Done that! It has always worked for me.
