Finding TDC without a barring tool....
Finding TDC without a barring tool....
So I pull my valve cover.....
Wow am I ever surprised how clean the top of that motor is! There is no carbon/ coked oil and general "splooge" that is often built up in the valve covers of other tractor/truck engines I've pulled apart. Very impressed. I guess regular Rotella changes have been well worth it.
Since I don't have a barring tool I figured I could just roll it over with the alternator nut...... No Joy! Just slips on the belt with little resistance.
I guess my serpentine belt must be stretched/ worn out??
Anyone else have any great ideas for rolling that pig over to find TDC??? Besides putting it back together driving 1.5 hours to go to town and get a new belt?
I'm sure one of y'all has an ingenious idea.
Thanks.

Turn it over backwards with the alt belt,it should work fine.Ive done that quite a few times.Ive never had the belt slip, exc that time there was oil on it from the head gasket
If its an auto, you can remove the 3 5/16" headed bolts on the TC inspection cover, and use a large screwdriver between the flywheel teeth to turn it over.Pry against the trans case, and it will turn right over.

Get a socket on the crank , turn slow as to let the compression leak by piston and not unscrew bolt .
Are you looking to find TDC still or just turn over eng. ?
Companion method , almost any eng. , divide firing order in 2 colums , the top 2 numbers are companion cylinders , for the 5.9 they are #1 -#6 , take valve cover off # 6 , turn eng. over till the rockers are just begining to move in opessent directions at the same time , I like to mount a pointer at this time for future use , also mark balancer .

Yeah I had the breather cove off, ard to see the mark on the gear though as the rad and air to air are in the way......
Wonder how much the barring tool costs??
Cant say I've ever tried to roll it over by hand by jacking up a tire, the amount of compression these things have seems doubtful..... But I never tried or thought of that one, sounds like a good idea.

The barring tool cost about $35 depending on where you get it , I've read some post lately that talked about Cummins have a maintainace set for $49 , then if you join the power service club at Cummins you get a discount , it cost about $19 , the savings on my 1st buy was more that the cost of joining , and I only spent about $50 .
