Just go to an auto parts store, most do it as a courtesy thing. Then go directly to the inspection in case they are reoccuring codes

what codes are coming up??? i can't think of one that would cause an emissions failure on a 98/99 diesel

Hes in CA, they wont pass any thing with a engine code ,CA, is a anti Diesel state. carb and city people hate us. they want all the trucks that smoke a little and get 20+ mpg off the road and replaced with trucks that dont smoke and get 12mpg it help bring cash in for the ruling class!

You can not just delete the codes. There are counters and other stored data that has to be in the normal range after 30+ cold/hot start cycles. They will not pass until then and those memory location have cleared and the right data they are looking for is correct. Spending money on getting it retested to just fail is just a waste of $$$ and blood pressure. Take it to a good mechanic and they will tell you how long it takes to clear those computer registers and be able to pass the inspection. It all depends on what the problem is. Just an 02 sensor will take a month to clear the register with daily driving for example. You may have to just pay the DMV fees and get a one time per year 60 day temporary permit for 50 bucks until it will pass.

Oh.....I'm sure there is no BS by the OP saying that they wouldn't pass his truck with present codes. California is so tight that you couldn't shove a warm buttered nail up the back sides of most CA legislators. I can guarantee that if the smog tech hooks up to your truck and there's a code saying your back tires are going forward then you can forget passing.
