Excessive Blow by question.
Excessive Blow by question.
I was talking to a friend I havent seen in awhile over Christmas, and was asking about his 01 CTD, He said he has parked it do to excessive blow by, He said it started having bad blow by for awhile and then one day he went out to get in it and it had a puddle of oil under it and since he has parked it. He was told by a mechanic that it needed rings and bearings. It is an 01 with 230,000 miles no chips, the only mod is an after market filter. He has owned it since 70,000miles. Does anyone have an idea as to what is wrong with it and or maybe the mechanic is correct, I just thought with 230,000 miles it wouldnt need bearings and rings already. Where I work we run these motors in our Ottawa yard trucks that get abused and they last 500,000+ miles. We have only had one motor fail and it had the intake come off and sucked in dirt and gravel for sometime.....thanks Joe.
yeah, check the puke bottle on the front of the engine. What's he do with this truck? We had some engines that we had to dyno at the Cat dealer once that were using oil. They came out of some wheel loaders than just "rode around the yard" and did'nt do much work. So, the rings came unseated for lack of a better description. We put it on the dyno for about 3 hours and loaded the heck out of it the whole time. As mechanics we never heard about it again when the customer got the engine back.
I don't know how true/tested that theory above is. But a diesel is a working engine from what I've learned and needs to be loaded. I'm sure others will chime in shortly.

checknig the bottle if it has one would be the firststep. what kind of filter is on it? what are the conditions he drives in. if he has a k&n and does construction or something exposed frequently to dust and dirt I wouldnt be surprised, if not, a compression check is due. also check for vacuum leaks they can cause excessive blowby on our trucks

Are all the vacaum controled devices working???? If the vac pump cannot pull against a vac it will push excessive air into crankcase producing the apperance of excessive blowby. JMHO
is there a compression spec for these motors? ive looked in some of the cummins books but have only come up with a measurement for blowby using a manometer. im having a similar problem with my 98.5. first step is gonna be to rebuild my vac. pump since its leaking anyway.

My 01 engine had 325k on it and NO ridge at the top of the cylinders,I hear about ppl parking they're trucks all the time, cause' some mechanic told them it had "excessive" blowby, tell him to quit being silly and run her till she gives up.
(probably be another 300k)
My oil puddle problems were.
1.Crappy bottle thingy on front.Built a tube that runs that to the rear of the engine.
2.leaky cover, took that off and sealed it,then sealed it again, since I did not change the front seal the first time.doh!
3.leaking front seal.
4.A leaking gasket where the vacuum pump mounts.
Pretty much just need a new rear main seal and I won't be leaking all that oil anymore.
it only leaks about 2 quarts every 7500miles.
