Erratic speedometer

1999 Ram 3500 SLT Quad Cab Duallie, Cummins, automatic 2wd

I changed my speedometer sending unit/sensor (sensor BWD S8023)due to the speedometer being erratic(bouncing about 25 mph) above 30 mph.

It is doing the same thing again after only maybe about 300 miles of use!

Could this be a bad replacement sensor or something else in the system?

Thanks

I take it the speed sensor you're talking about is the one located on the top of the rear differential. If you have 4 wheel ABS then you also have sensors on each of the front tires as well. You'll see the sensor wire if you do.

The speed sensor I have changed is the one in the transmission. Left hand side output/tail shaft housing.

You should have one on the top of the differential housing too. It can get dirty or covered in metal shavings or just quit and it reads the tone ring on the differential for speed.

I'll pull the differential sensor, clean it and give it a try. Working on racecar right now so it may be a few days yet.

BTW- all the dash fault indicators clear as normal before start-up.

Well, I changed the sensor on the transmission again and all seems well. The first one was a tiny bit skippy at first and this one is very stable.
