Engine Surging

Hey Guys I need some advice. My truck has started surging while going down the road w/cruise on and off. It is almost like the fuel is being cut off. The truck does not stall it just has a "hesitation" at cruising speeds. I have a fuel pressure gauge and have a new lift pump I am steady at 15psi all the time. Could this be my VP44 failing? Or possibly a sensor of some sort? I have NO CODES, so I am kinda flying blind. I would like to hear some ideas on what you all think it might be. I can get a VP44 for $1100 but I would like to rule everything out first... I am driving a 99 3500 4x4 5speed w/200k on it. Any help would be appreciated!

Dr. Evil,
Hey thank you for the advice, I am going out in the driveway to do it right now. I have scanned it with my scanner and no codes are coming up. However I have heard that this can happen and the VP44 can still be on the fritz.

Thanks Again... I am crossing my fingers.

well....... No luck.. Truck still runs the same. Good pressure, no codes, it sounds like the truck is just not getting fuel or it has a miss. HMMM. I am going to take it to my diesel mechanic and see what he thinks..... Here we go! Where is my checkbook?? Any other suggestions?

At what RPM does the surging occur

Good Luck.

I would actually change the fuel filter first. I have had the surging issue on several customers trucks, and after having about 1/2 dozen become happy with simply changing the filter. It has become the starting point.

Good luck uh huh huh huh

Hey guys,
Thank You for some more suggestions! I am going to change the fuel filter tomorrow. If this doesnt work I know an excellent Dodge mechanic not too far from me. This is a guy who the local dealer calls when they have no idea what is going on. He also told me to bring it down before I buy a pump. The surging happens from 1900 to 2000+ RPMs. The truck starts up and idles fine and runs fine until higher RPMs. Any ideas are really appreciated, they will also give him something to think about.

Is the air conditioner compressor cycling when you get the surge? 5hp should be a noticable drag when suddenly applied...mine had a slight momentary "drag" last saturday which happened when the AC compressor cycled and completely stopped when I turned the AC off.

Haven't had the truck long..... I am a dealer. I buy trucks and put about 20k on them and then sell them and move onto another. I buy high milage trucks and basically use them for free MILES NEVER SCARE ME! I saw a 96 3500 with over 800k on it and the guy was using it daily... if I get a good buy and can sell them for a decent price. I will have to admit oil changes are just about as far as I take it. I have had SEVERAL diesels, mostly dodge and fords...... and if you are hauling anything you want a dodge. This is the first dodge in probably 20 that has ever given me a hickup. I had a 95 F800 rollback with a 12v in it for about 4yrs and it had over 450,000 miles... that truck is still going today and I wouldnt be suprised if it never stops. That truck was turned up and used hard and all it did was start up and ask for more day after day. I love this site.... I read posts everyday!

Thanks Again

Thanks Again Guys!!
First guys I want to thank y’all for all your help. I am having the surging problem with a 99 Dodge 3500 5.9 24v. I have changed the APPS reset it several times with taking the cables off and draining the ECM, changed fuel filter even changed negative battery terminals just in case they were not grounding good and causing electrical inference. The only thing that helps and it’s temporary is taking the cables off for over night and then it’s back within 30 minutes or so. VP 44 looks to be new. It has an AirDog on it. The fuel pressure is at 14-15psi at idle. The truck doesn’t have a tuner on it. Looking for help
