Carl, I believe 0230 is lift pump malfunction (if memory serves me right). Can you hear the lift pump run for 20-25 seconds when you bump (engage but not start) the starter??

The best thing would be to have the fuel pressure checked at the test port (Schreader fitting) on the VP-44

Are you still under warranty??/ If not, Id call a couple of diesel shops - sometimes thay have more knowledgeable mechanics, JMO.

Carl05, I had the same code on my 01 HO.My fuel pressure was normal one min and dropped 5psi at idle the next. I babied it home, fuel pressure at 40 miles hour was ZERO . I removed my fuel pressure assembly and hooked up a hand held pressure guage --- went from 4psi down below zero. After
reinstalling installing my fuel pressure guage and moving truck back in the garage my check engine light came on and sure enough ---- 0230 --- The dealer had to replace the LP. My truck is still under warrenty so no cost to me at this time. If your warrenty is over I'd research installing a pusher pump or FASS. Good Luck,

Gary

My guess is lift pump... My uncles 98 24 valve would miss/blow white smoke when the lift pump went out. It also did the same when the injection pump went out though....

Well I guess I will start looking for a LP tomarrow...

I couldent find one on napaonline.com, advanceautoparts.com, or autozone.com. I will try calling the dealer or try just calling napa. Maybe I am searching by the wrong part name?

Know any sites to buy from for a good deal?

Well I think theres lot of guys here from Virginia.....maybe one will chime in

Carl, at the very least replace the lift pump in the stock location aAND get yourself a cab mounted fuel pressure guage. It will pay for itself time and time again if it saves even one injector pump.

BTW, just a FYI, dont drive the truck much until this is fixed...as it can take out the injector pump.

Our engine is used on all kinds of trucks. I know there is a place in Martinsburg. Also somewhere in these forums I remember seeing posts for aftermarket pumps. Do a search.

Most any simi truck shop can get Cummins parts. Google "Cummins" and your state and you'll find something.

If you can afford it, I would look into the FASS II transfer pump...piers diesel lists it at $389 and you will only need to buy one of those. No need to buy a new lift pump every 20k miles.

Plus the FASS pump will put out a higher pressure and volume of fuel to help protect your vp-44 injection pump from biting the dust as well.

I had the same problem with my 99' CTD work truck, every once in awhile I would go to accelerate and it would just cut out and roll out some white smoke. My boss thought it was just the fuel filter so we changed that and it ran fine for awhile and then did it again. Needless to say after a couple fuel filters and no fix, it turned out being the Lift Pump that was cutting out and intern fried the Injector pump. I'll agree with everybody saying that it's the lift pump!!

The injector pump will sometimes show some signs of failure when starting the truck for the first time of the day. It will start hard and idle rough and puke some white smoke..............mine sadly is doing this right now. However this isn't always the case, the LP can cause this too.
