Engine install

Is it possible to install the engine, transmission (and t-case), in the truck as an assembly? Or does the the trans have to be installed from underneath? If this is the case, hopefully I can rent a transmission jack.

I would think that if you had the intercooler, tranny cooler, rad etc it should be adble to slide in. I have done it numerous times on gassers. Granted the cummins plus the tranny and t case would require a good lift and to keep the lift in the proper weight slots. Never hurts to try.

Maybe pull the cab, bolt it to the frame then drop that cab back on.

Go to walmart and buy one of the 2 inch straps with the hooks. There is a hole on each side of the frame about 1 inch in diameter. Put the strap under the trans and tighten to snug. Unbolt the engine from the trans. But first you have to raise the engine and take the pan and pickup off. The engine cannot come out with the pan on it.

To raise the engine enough you will probably have to take the rear valve train off for clearance. Lay a rag over the back of the head to keep the fiberglass insulation out of the motor.

While the engine is raised it is easiest to remove the motor mounts brackets, just makes it easier. Also the air conditioning compressor must come off for cleanance. You can get the engine out with it on but will not get it back in that way. So.....

1 put strap under trans
2 remove valve cover and rear two rocker assy.
3 remove air comp
4 raise engine high as it will go
5 remove pan
6 remove pickup
7 remove mount brackets
8 set engine back down on strap and disconnect from transmission

The bumper can stay on but the rest of the stuff has to come out of the front.

Well, we tried to do it with the tranny attached but it just wasn't happening... both are in now and I'm trying to figure out where all the lines go.
