Dually tire pressure

I know this may sound like a dumb question but please bear with me and I appreciate your comments. This is my first dually and the door pillar tag says run 55psi in all four rear tires with no mention of load. That sounds way high to me with an empty bed, except for a 300lb toolbox. When I took delivery of the truck the dealer had them inflated to 40psi, so I left it there. Just towed my 10k trailer several hundred miles last week and the tires did not heat up (75 degree ambient temp), ride was good and there was no noticable tire squat and no wiggle with the crosswinds and semi's. One guy told me to run different pressures in the inside vs outside tires, now that sounds strange but at this point what do I know. Thanks.

Buford,
Are these original tires?
If not, go with what's on the side wall -5 to -10 psi. I've been doing that fer years and have had no trouble.
Generally running BFG All terrains. 285's.
UNLESS, yer haulin a heavy load, then do the max sidewall psi.
I usually run my back at -10 and the front at -5 max sidewall psi.
Anyone else?

on mine i run what the tire recomends in the rears and about 10 less on the front rears 80 front 70. that way it doesnt hurt the sidewall plus i figure the tire guys know more then the truck guys but thats just me

I run 45 psi in the rears and 55 in the front wears flat as a pancake , Empty 90% of the time execpt for the tool box.

Thanks for the info. These are the stock Goodyear LT235/80R17E tires it came with. The truck has just turned 1k miles so I am trying to get the wear patterns started correctly without wearing out the center from over inflation. -10 on the back (from the 55 psi Dodge recommends sounds about right to me, I think. I am running 50 in the front since they are hauling all that iron around all the time and I sometimes corner faster than I should to hear my wife tell it.........

my tire guys tell me that on them 17's you need to rotate them to keep from wearing them out. i asked becuz hopefully i will be getting an 05 by wed. plus you need to post in the third gen forums your to new for here.

Rich, thanks for letting me know I am in the wrong place but you guys have pretty much already answered my question. I agree on your tire rotation point as well, I read the owners manual on that issue the first day I had the truck and am really looking to that job, have to get out my big impact and jack stands! Talked to one guy and he said I should get 80k on these tires if I rotate them properly and don't hotrod around. He said just replace them two at a time and keep on trucking. Should have over 100k before all 6 are new. Sounds really good, hope he is right. I will be more careful with my post selection next time. Thanks again

Buford, you might want to check your tires on the inside, between the 2 duals. If you underinflate them they will expand when hit ground and touch inside. This will cause quick wear and possibly blow up of 1 or both tires.

I would go with with pressure close to tire rating, more than dealer suggestions. or at least mfg label (if it's for dual tires).
