does tranny fluid really matter?

So on my new tranny im having some problems, i called a shop and they said make sure it has ATF 4 and if not change it ASAP. the guy that built my tranny said it didnt matter and i believe he just put in like regular fluid not the ATF stuff. Should i change it or does it matter?

The higher the number, the more friction modifiers that are added tot eh product. This is a polite way of saying slip. Basically, people want smooth shifts in newer trucks and the +4 helps that.

If you have a rebuild you are fine either way. However, many stock transmissions need the added friction modifiers for the OEM seals.

If you get any shudder, just throw a bottle of Lubegaurd in with the cheap fluid.

What type of problems are you having? Is it slipping or shudder? I have goerend vb/tq and Dave told me to use ATF3 with the lubeguard, not the ATF4. Need more info to help ya.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Chrysler spendt mega dollars engineering atf+4 with a superior high temp tolerant additive package. No earleir ATF or snake oil is an improvement.
Friction moddifiers enhance the griping ability of ATF not allowing to slip(as much) in gear. Much like Ford type F was superior to early Dexron in clutch enhanching abilities. However Type F was not as temp tolerant or have good detergent additives like Dex some 40 years ago.

That works for after market trannys but I would not do it on a tranny rebuilt to factory specs.
I agree with 'Dozier'. If factory rebuild .... use ATF+4.
I prefer it in my DTT as well, but the reasons why do not concern this thread.

Classic TC cycling. Use a DTT noise filter.

They didn't have ATF4 in 2002 correct? Factory specs would be ATF3, so dex with lubeguard is the closest to ATF3. Just asking.
