Dex III in 241 Transfer Case?
Dex III in 241 Transfer Case?
I use Merc/Dex III in my Goerend tranny. Can I use the same stuff in the transfer case? Is it okay to just drain the ATF+4 and replace it with the MDIII?
But until we have a definative answer....I would not use other, unless you have a Goerand transfer case also!

Thinks it was required in 2000 also? Maybe T-Case is different?
EDIT: Just found it in my FSM........My 02 calls for AFT+4 in the transfer case also!

I just checked the FSM 2000 and 2001 both say dex3 for the automatic and the transfer case. I also checked the owners manual and it says the same thing, dex3. Although mines a standard I have used dex3 in the transfer case from new. The transfer case had a rear seal leak from almost new and the dealer didn't seem to want to do anything with it. I replaced it and changed the oil with dex3 and have changed it regular with dex3 since. I pull fairly heavy and the oil always comes out clean. Oh it was the same for the 241HD as well.
I got to thinking and maybe the DEX4 was not available in Canada (pity) at that time, like I said before I didn't think it was around back then. Another thing, I have a paper copy of the FSM and at that time all that was available was a 2001 "supplement" with a 2000 manual. If it was not in the supplement then it was supposed to be the same as the 2000, but my owners manual calls for dex3 also. Strange.

Double checked my FSM (digital copy) and it definitely says ATF+4 for the 241HD. Interesting that some books call for DexIII and others (mine) ATF+4. Has anyone ever flushed one out and refilled it with a different fluid? Also how do you get the darn check and drain plugs out? What size hex is that? My 3/8" is slightly too small. Is that a 12mm or 7/16th or what?
The plugs are WAY overtightened from the factory if you ask me, but if not they leak.
I reinstalled mine the last few times with Teflon tape and under tightened them. Last thing you want to do is crack the case. I thought the plug was 3/8 but maybe it's metric. I'll measure the Allen wrench socket later this morning.

Just bought a metric hex/socket set (3/8") from Northern Tool. 6 pieces for $5.99 with Lifetime Warranty. Lowe's wanted upwards of $25 for anything near that. Stepping out to crank on it now....
when I bought my truck the owner before of whoever looked like they used the wrong size and the fill plug was rounded. had to weld a nut on it to get it off and then I bought a new plug and have used alittle t-tape on them since. no problem in 90k miles so far. I have always used ATF-4 just read my manual states merc-3 but I dont think any problems will arrise I do change my fluid once a year pretty cheap fluid.
