I'm a bit perplexed. I dropped off my truck yesterday to have them do a valve adjustment and some other things since it's at 100k miles. They did the other stuff, but they told me since mine was a 24 valve, it didn't need a valve adjustment. I've never heard of this before. I thought the 24v needed one at 100k miles vs. earlier miles for the 12v. Can someone clear this up for me?

 

According to www.dodgeram.org, the Valves are due at 150,000 miles.

 

According to the FSM for model year 2000 it's 150,000 miles or 150 months.

 

Ok, that's cool. I'm not due yet since I'm just about 99k miles. I guess I'll wait until then. Then I will have to convince them it's needed, and bring my own specs with me.<br><br>I find it odd that their service manual says that NO VALVE ADJUSTMENT is needed on the 24v. It really does say that. I wonder where the communication lines between DC and Cummins occured, or if it's really true now?

 

What I read somewhere was only in case of a major overhaul. No periodics needed.

 

What's it cost to have done, i'm getting closer to 150k every day.

 

The word on the valve adj. is 150,000 miles on 24 valve engines. I've done them on trucks with less miles ,but as far as the manual at the shop states it's 150k. And no I don't work for Dodge.

 

When you do adjust the valves, I hear tell the trick thing is to adjust them 8-20 rather than 10-20. Suppose to help power a little. Someone with more knowledge than most likely can speak better to as why tighter might help.

 

8-17 . Less noise. Maybe more power. Ran better until last week . Ripped out front end, oil pan, &amp; bent frame. Looking for new truck. :'(

 

Jack,<br>If you want your valves adjusted, I would go have it done at a Cummins shop, or a shop that specializes in Diesels.<br>It is a simple task, just takes a little time (1 hour).<br><br>--Justin

 

Personally Jack I would spend the approx. 1 hour charge and have a fussy reputable Cummins diesel mechanic do it and show me the adjustment results. This will tell you if it was out and may if adjustment was needed prevent a bigger problem from occuring. The local boys at Cummins will also be able to keep you informed as to general valve adjustment and wear patterns of 5.9's per model through service trends. Your local dealer would love to sell you a new engine/parts due to oversights on your part despite &quot;their&quot; recommendations, however if there is no indication of adjustment needed as the driver knowing of any changes in the way it runs leave it be.PK

 

Jack, <br><br>Just had 2nd valve adjustment with 254k. 1st one was at 2/18/02 with 145k. #3 was loose and #6 tight each time ???, and the rest needed slight-fine tuning. I did notice it was quiter today after adjustment. I would do every 100k.<br>Just my .02.<br><br>Karl

 

Thanks for all the info guys. I do appreciate it. I'm going to take it to Cummins later and at least let them check to see if it's within specs.

 

A friend of mine here at work did his and found about six that were slightly off a few thousandths. Not sure it was worth all of that work but it made him feel better. That is the main thing. Mine is running so good right now, I hate to touch it.
