Cummins MiSsInG at Idle!!!???
Alright, a few months ago i noticed a slight miss after my pickup warmed up and it only occured at idle, never on acceleration or WOT. So does anyone have any ideas I do not have gauges YET but could it be something related to fuel?? or injectors??My truck has 102,000 on the odom, so is this common when the mileage gets up? Recently the miss has become more significant and without gauges im beginning to worry so someone please come through and give me some insight to this problem.
Get some sort of gauge with a 1/8 npt to tap into the top of you fuel filter cannister (someone double check me on this, not sure on a 98.5). This will help determine what kind of fuel pressure you have. It could be you're lift pump is dying or already dead. The ugly side of a dead lift pump is it could kill your injection pump which is about $1,000+ to replace.

"MikeD" is giving you some good advice. I would add that your truck has a "fuel test port" right on the top of the fuel filter housing which is located on the left (drivers side) of the engine. If you do not have a fuel pressure test gauge, or a friend who can help you out, any good diesel shop or Dodge dealer should be able to to do this for you. With the stock fuel system, you should have around 10-14lbs. at idle and NEVER less than five (5) lbs. at WOT.
As Mike said, if you have less than what I posted, you better do something pretty fast as the VP-44 fuel pump will not live with low or no fuel pressure.
Let us know what you find. Good luck!
