cummins died today

i was going down the highway and i accelerated and nothing happened. i accelerated harder and the rpm's then started to drop. no check engine light, nothing. i come to a stop at the red light and the truck shuts off. cannot restart. another cummins owner stopped and towed me to a parking lot. still will not start and smokes bad when trying to get it to crank. finally got it to fire off with some starting fluid. carefully drove it home when the check engine light came on. now i am getting codes p0251, p0252, and p1688. each code appears 2 times for a total of 6 codes. the truck will only crank with use of starting fluid and will cut out at around 1800 to 2000 rpms. starts to spit and sputter very bad. fuel pressure is at 15 psi idle and no lower than 12 psi accelerating. i changed the air and fuel filter still throws codes, and unhooked my edge box and still throws codes. fearing vp44 failure. what could my problem be? if the vp44 is dying, where is the best place to buy one? thanks

P0252 has 2 entries :

Fuel Valve Signal Missing :
Problem sensed with fuel circuit internal to fuel injection
pump.

VP44 stuck fuel valve error :
Fuel solenoid circuit not detecting solenoid valve movement

As far as buying a new one, most remans can be had for under $1000. I believe some people have used http://www.cumminsstuff.com with decent results.

the truck will crank and idle fine now but once it is reved to about 1500 to 2000 rpms it hesitates and sputters, and then throws the check engine light. could it be something else or is it the vp44?

well i found a servie bulletin on the p0252 code saying that the pump could have detected "tampering" with and caused it to fail. so could the edge ez be causing the pump to fail? i don't want to put a new pump in and have the same thing happen again. should i leave the ez off?

The EZ is a mild box. Doubt it was at fault

Your Vp44 took a dive. I just replaced mine w/lift pump. I shopped all around the net since 1/16/05 when the truck died. The best price out there is cumminstuff.com and i ordered it Wednesday and it was at my door (TEXAS to Pennsylvania) Monday 2/7/05 It's the 027 upgrade remanufactured pump for 975.00

Good luck, and if you do it yourself, read the subject post P1688 and P0216 by me. I explained on making a puller if you don't have one.

Mouse,

What symptoms did your engine have when the FPCM went out on your VP44?
