Crap MPG

Alright guys I dont know what to do. I just hand calculated 14mpg....

I have a 2000 Cummins, 4x4, Auto, Quad Cab, Short Bed With BHAF, Airdog 100, Edge Juice with Attitude at 5x5,Turbo Silencer Removed, Upgraded TQ Converter and Shafts, and 5" TB exhaust. Rolling on 285's.

Ive aired tires to 65psi all around, cleaned MAP and IAT.

Im not looking for 25mpg but I want to be as close to 20mog as possible. And the thing is, I dive like a grandma. NO BS, I drive very very easy on the go pedal.

I'm lost here. What do I need to check next?

Thanks
Jeff

what rear gears do you have? 4:10 will get you in your mpg range 3:55 will get you in the 20 range . also a worn VP 44 can cause low mpg if it cant advance timing properly . could also try and replace IAT,map, been a few guys on here that did that and it worked better then cleaning them. 285 will cut it a little as will auto trans. seems like the 3:55 manual trans trucks get the best MPGs

I have the 3.42 or something like that. VP44 is less then 50k miles old. I just cleaned the IAT and MAP.

Is there a way to tell if the IAT or Map are bad?

Im stuck.....

if the map sensor is bad, you will get a code and cel.....i don't know what the code is off hand but do a search and you'll find it.....

Your driving around with the edge on 5X5? The 3.54 gears, 285 tires and auto. I can't see you getting 20mpg (on the hwy) unless you turn the box way down. JMHO

wouldnt the box being turned way down provide less power thus making the truck need more fuel

wouldnt the box turned up mean its producing more power which is needing more fuel to do this. power comes from fuel. setting lower on a timing setting and having a edm cut injector would be the best bet IMO having a auto does it hunt alot between 3-4th gear. this would burn more. I would try lowering the power first and upping the timing.

no hunting between 3rd and 4th i fixed that by rewiring the APPS from the ATS fix.

You drive mostly around town or on the highway? I get 15 around town and about 20 highway but I am around town mostly. If you really do drive like a grandma why do you have the box set on 5?

I drive about 70% highway. I set it on 5 because i figured the more power the truck has the less power it will take to drive normal speeds.

Have you had you speedo recalibrated for the bigger size tires? I have noticed that when I used my smarty to recalibrate for just 265 made a difference in my milage. Its just an idea.

I agree with dieselwrks.. Fuel is power.
However, I have heard of some guys getting their best mpg on 5x5. They also say thay have to drive like a grand ma to get it, but 5x5 shows them the best results.
And I dont know about you guys but I didnt see any dif at all when I tried 1x1-5. I drive on 3x4 all the time. Start a little slower at lights so I dont even smoke, But get up to speed fine, normally get about 13mpg around town on my 35's and can smoke pretty easily if I want to.
