crankcase breather broken how tough to fix
Recently I started to find oil spots under my truck. so i started checking the oily mess on the front of my engine I had been avoiding... I found the the tube that comes out of the top of the breather on the engine is broken in half. It was fixed with silicone. How much of pain is this going to be or should I redneck engineer something?
Not sure what year truck you have but I'm assuming since you posted in this forum that it is a second Gen. That whole plastic thing just threads out of the timing gear cover (counterclockwise) and has a rubber o-ring on the back of it. Just thread it out and get a new one. An oil filter wrench works nicely to remove it and it does not have to be very tight going back. Only enough to line up the vent hose on the top.
I priced one at the dealer(Cummins) and it was over 80$!!! Mine was broken where the hose connects to the plastic tube part, so I reamed the hole larger where the tube used to be, I then threaded a 1/2 brass nipple into it then hooked the hose back on 40,000kms later and still 80$ richer and no leaks.
BTW mine got busted when the breather hose somehow(large water puddle) managed to get caught in the fan
