Could This Be My Mystery CLunk?

If i was a betting man, i would lay money in the shock mounts, but the top has both rubber bushings in each side, and they are tight, and have been re-tightened. When i changed the shocks last year, it was doing it already, and when i put the new ones in, it stopped it for a few weeks, then slowly came back...

One observation i realized today was, If i dont have my hands on the steering wheel when i brake or accelrate, i dont feel the clunk, as soon as i touch the wheel and tap the brakes, i feel it. So, its definately only felt in the steering wheel.

Check the bushings on the shift linkage for the transmission if you have an automatic. You could also grab hold of the linkage on the column in the engine bay and see if there is any play.

So, i went under the hood and grabbed the universal joint ( in the steering shaft) just by the firewall. I have about a 1/4 inch of play in all directions...up, down , side to side....It isnt tight and true....Whats up with that?

if there's a 1/4" of play in your steering shaft then you will have to replace it to get rid of the clunk....I wouldn't get a factory replacement....Go with Borgeson or something....It is much better than the stock one & won't wear out....

I tightened the top of the shock down twice, and it didnt help it at all. ( i was sure it would have been the shock) And i impacted the bottom bolts. Now thats it getting colder here, its hardly there anymore( just like last year) The hotter the day, the more sloppier the clunk. But, like i mentioned earlier, if i take my hands off the steering wheel, i dont feel it.

I had that same problem....There was a bushing that was worn out on the gearshift linkage that caused a constant popping noise when going over rough roads.....I couldn't believe how expensive the bushings were from mopar.....about $34.00 each and it's just a plastic bushing.....must be a common problem with the automatic transmissions.....Did you have to replace yours also?

Well.....My mystery clunk is my steering box. If someone is turning the wheel side to side with the truck off, you can hear it and as well see the (output shaft ?) ( where the pitman arm attaches) shaft moving side to side, inside the steering box

Just reading all the way through this at one sitting and that's where it looked like it was headed. Glad you found it but really sorry for the expense that's headed your way.
