Converter lock going in and out.
Converter lock going in and out.
Hello all I'm a newbie to this site and Dodge trucks, But not to diesels. Well a few days ago I bought a 98.5 2500 4x4 from a guy that took good care of it. It had high miles. Well I have the problems others have posted about. I have to clean the battery terminals they are crudded up. ANd I haven't had a chance to clean them bercause of it being 12* outside. I see people have had done the foil mod, ATS bypass mod, A DTT noise filter. What is the best way to cure the problem? I'm also gooing to change all fluids and filters transmision too. I have a Snap on Modus and will check for codes. Any Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks John

Purely FWIW, I tried putting the "Mystery Switch" in. The switch itself
does not work AFAIK (don't think I used a good ground), but ever since
I have had no hunting. My theory is just taking apart the connections
behind the air box and putting them back together made a better electrical
connection.

I had this same problem on my truck and hooked it up to a snap-on scanner for a trip around town. I got a great pull going up a hill where it was violently going in and out of lock as quickly as it could. The PCM was actually commanding the torque converter to lock and unlock.
My theory was that a sensor (I forgot which one) was getting very unclean constant voltage and that was throwing off its output causing the truck to freak out. I’ve known for years that good electrical connections will solve many odd problems and a good friend of mine suggested to start with the batteries because they act as a capacitor of sorts and help smooth out system voltage.
I decided that the factory grounds were WAY too small, so I ran a 4ga wire negative to negative and a 4ga wire from each battery to frame. My first attempt only got me through winter and suffered from dissimilar metal corrosion. My second version used steel ring terminals and copper wire with a little more effort to weather proof the connections, it has lasted roughly two years.
Could just be me, but the truck seems to crank harder fire quicker. I picked up roughly 4MPG and I’ve never gone TC hunting ever since.
