converter lock in-out
converter lock in-out
this is in the other catagory so be nice.
in addition to my diesel i also have a 2001 sport shortbox with a 318 automatic (51000 miles on it)
this truck has developed an erratic shifting pattern problem that has got me frustrated to say the least.
i have had it in for transmission check (they changed a governer) . with no improvement . then the dealer put a computer on board and we drove it for a couple days and the dealer sent a readout to Chrysler for evaluation.
Chrysler told them to isolate the wiring going to the tranny and run a seperate ground to get rid of electrical noise. They also changed an oxygen sensor. Still have the same problem and am now being told it is inherent and nothing more can be done
It was not like this (or at least not this bad for the first 45000 miles). they are saying what i am expeirencing is the torque converter locking in and going out of lock up.
now a little bit of this back and forth i can tolerate but it is doing it constantly . feels like i am flooring the accelerator and then releasing it over and over. about the only time it stops is when i accelerate hard or am climing grades. Also it is worse when using cruise control.
How do i fix this thing ?

no, and i had the same thought this morning when i was driving it as i have replaced a couple of them on my diesel. the computer print out shows the converter locking and unlocking during these "surges" , but they might happen because of the torque and lack of from inconsistant fueling i suppose ?

the way the price of this diesel fuel is going up i may be picking up some business from this crowd

doesn't seem to be effected by power usage---dodge put a noise filter on last week. i called them today and ask them if they thought it could be the tps and they said they didn't think so or it should have shown on their computer. also had a new one put on a year or so ago. said to bring it up and they would put one on but if it did not help it was still mine to buy.
i love these service dept's

Isn't there a lock-up solonoid on these Dodge transmissions? I had that problem on my 98 CTD and remember being told to have that replaced. Mine just quit doing it so I never fixed it....
Its a dodge gasser tranny, its just bound to go bad, no matter if you have modded the engine or not. Mine supposidly had a rebuild a little while before I had it, and I know something was done to it, cause the TQ was TIGHT. Now, its starting to act funny again, shifting wierd on my 97. It has 138,00 miles on it, I've put 50,000 on it. Its actually a VERY COMMON thing for these trucks to have the trannies go bad. Check out www.pavementsucks.com there has been quite a bit of talk over there about them.
Sounds to me like the TQ might be going south too. If you get it rebuilt, DO NOT go back to factory specs, get a good shop to rebuild it using the 47re parts it can in it(some stuff is interchangable with the 47re's, and they're made to handle more power). Also, get either a new valve body or shift kit put in, and run a BIG tranny cooler, gotta keep that thing cool.
Let me know if you need anything else, I'll try to help you find the stuff you need the best I can. Darn Dodge trannies.
