i did it! i converted my dually to a standard 4 wheel pick up, increased mileage from 15-16 to 19-20...i put on `04 17 inch wheels & tires & bed from a 98 3/4 ton....see picture

Nice job. I assume you had to find a donor rear axle as well? Do you have any side pictures? I have been considering switching to '04 wheels also. Any fitment problems with the wheels?

no problems w/ wheels .they bolt right on....my rear axle is the same ( dana 80 with the wide brakes)

I had tried to put my dads 01 rims on my 98.5 and the tie rods hit the rims.
I guessing the backspacing is different in my truck compared to my dads 01. Will the 17" rims clear my tie rods? Nice job on the conversion! Sharp CTD to!

 

Are the new wheels/tire combo the same overall size as what you were running?
If the new 17" wheels have taller tires than what you had when it was dually, you will need to figure that taller tire into your mpg calculations.

my speedometer is accurate at any speed, i checked it with a stop watch

 

John, just because you checked it with a stop watch, that doesn't mean that your speed is 100% accurrate. My buddy took in his furd for the same thing, the mechanic told him that his tires and speedo were accurrate, and that he timed it w/ a stop watch. His service manager came in and then explained why that isn't a 100% justafiable and why it would still cause the speedo to be inaccurrate. I've had a few too many beers tonite to think too hard about this, but I'm sure someone else can chime in here to clearify everything. If not, then I'll call my buddy in the morning and tell him to explain it to me so I can atleast stick up for my argument.

 

I'd just find the rpm's of your tires (used to be a list around here) and have the dealer program that into your computer. That way you know everything will be accurate.

 

I just don`t understand why the stop watch is not accurate...with a simple mathmatical equation, a stop watch, and a measured mile as mile markers on the interstate, any body can verify the accuracy within a mile or two... which is as good as you can get. it would be impossible to have a speedometer 100% accurate all the time , new tires would show a different speed than worn ones
