Sorry, the engine was a CAT 3406E, but the point is eveyone's engine idled in the winter. The cruise was set so you hit it and it idled up to 1,100 or so.

The point to this is idling up wasn't about warmth primarily, as it was to keep from developing "slobber" as it was called. Don't know what it was made out of, but it was like liquid and would spit out the stacks. That's why, as all the mechanics told me, not to idle at less than 1,000-1,200 RPM. Maybe worth investigating.
That is what is refered to as wet stacking. Its basically unburnt fuel from low combustion temps. It builds up on the valve stems too. To much of it can gunk up and bind the valve, never a good thing. This is why prolonged low idling can be a bad thing.

Thanks for letting me know. Can I assume it would happen to our little diesels too?

Of course, and fuel washes past the rings and gets into the oil - NOT good....

No, the ECM will need to be reflashed to a version that has the high idle, then it will need to be activated.

Late 2001's and 2002's are the only ones that came with the high idle ready for activation.

I read in this forum that MAD ecm already has the high idle feature enabled
