cold auto trans not shifting

Hello everybody,

I have a 1999 2500 diesel with an auto trans. I have a problem everytime I first start my truck it will not shift out of first gear for about a mile or so than it takes off shifting fine, the colder it is the worse it is. Not sure what is going on and would like to know if you have any idea's?

Thanks

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Somewhat strange!!! Cold weather causes a shift program that raises upshipt points and will not allow OD until engine temp hits 80 degrees (temp may be off by few degrees, can't recall). That is not what you say though. No upshift out of low could be RPM sensor on rear outside of tranny, The gov pressure solenoid or the pressure transducer. It could be a cold connection issue with any of mentioned components.

I replaced the speed sensor on the trans. no luck. When I took it to the dealer I mentioned the bands and they said they have never had to adjust bands, so they flushed the trans anyway. I guess I will have to drop the pan and adjust them myself.

2 things, get your money back on the fluid cost from the dealer cause your going to be dumping it soon and 2nd never go back to that dealer. The bands need to be adjusted, not often but necessary. My dealer fluid filter and band adjustment was 150 last year.

Yes, bands NEED to be adjusted on these trucks. You can do it yourself really easy, the first time I did it was about 2 hours, but that was triple checking everything and of course not buying enough oil (I needed about 7 liters total). After adjustment, it shifts really nice!!! The next time I do it, won't take more than an hour.

Talk to the dealer and let him know how I felt and what you guys have been telling me, he finally had enough, told me the bring the reciept and he would refund me. They also filled my a/c and kept the caps from the lines, needless to say it is blowing warm air. Not going to let them touch my truck again to find the leak, just get my refund my 2 caps and they will never see me again.

Thanks for all the info

Wow a dealer giving money back. I would almost say they are a keeper but...

Stay away from them with your trans issues and now AC issues, from their work.

2 strikes your out
