Clutch Break-in Advice
Clutch Break-in Advice
I'm putting a SB OFE in my 6 speed next weekend so that I can run it for a week before I put in a new turbo and injectors. I have been told that I need to put several hundred miles on it before I start pouring the coal to it. Does anyone have any good advice or input as to the best way to break-in a new clutch like the OFE? Also, any special tools or advice on how to replace it? I have never done a clutch on anything but a lawnmower, so I am here to learn from the experts. Thanks for your time and advice. I have been told that putting a port-a-power bwteen the frame and applying a little pressure sure makes the cross member come out easy. Anyone done this?

I did one in the dealer, as I remember the crossmember was not a problem. I have a 5 pound dead blow hammer
. This was on a lift, with a tranny jack and all I have to say is be careful, that is one BIG HONKIN transmission!!! I'm surprised it did'nt crush the cheap tranny jack the dealer so graciously supplied for us!!

Crossmemebr will be a pain...but if you take the port-o-power and spread the frame rail a little, it will slide right in. The frames flew a lot more than you'd think
Done it on about 5 trucks now, no troubles...and the 95 gets a little weight put on it from time to time

Break-in would be a lot of city driving/stop and go for the first 500 miles...then you can start being harder on it
You can shhot me a PM if you need any help during the install...or I could give you a phone number if you think you'd need it.
Good Luck,
Chris

Hey, thanks, Sig600! I appreciate that. Like I've said before, I grew up in the body shop/wrecker service with my father and grandpa, so I got tools galore and a lot of shop sense, I'm just scared because I haven't tied into one and hope I get it back together right. I'll try to borrow a tranny jack and someone who has done it before if I can get them to drive the 20 miles to my house from Stillwater. My father is coming down tonight (so we can tell him he is going to be a grandpa soon) and thinks he is just coming down to bring me the port-o-power. Fooled him, eh?
I get tools, he gets a bib that says "I love my Grandpa"! How sweet....
Anyway. If I get it put in next week, say Friday/Saturday, I can drive the truck to work the next week and to OKC to the airport twice (wife's going to Ithica New York)
and get around 400 miles on it. I can put my juice on 1 and not hot rod....MAN THAT IS GOING TO BE HARD TO DO...and see how it goes. I just wanted to make sure that was the RIGHT thing to do.

That porta-power will help you out a lot. If you can't get your hands on one you can get creative with a bottle jack and a nice thick piece of oak - hard stuff. a tranny jack will help. Also when you take the weight off the back of the engine it will tilt forward so you may want to jack the front of your engine up a lil bit when putting the tranny back in. It'll make it a little easier to put back. Just a couple of things that have worked for me.
If you use a porta power the frame will spread perfectly so the crossmember will just drop in place. A hi-lo lift jack will also work just a little harder to work with.
As far as break in i gave my SB the recommended 500 miles befor pulling a trailer.
