Cleaning Puke Bottle
Hello, I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with 79,000 miles on it and just a recent owner. At my next oil change I would like to remove the puke bottle as recommended in the manual. Currently it is very dirty and was wondering if I can use some cleaner like Carb Cleaner to be able to see what it exactly looks like and how to remove it. Also can anyone give me any help on the process of removing the bottle to dump the oil in it and then put it back on?

I wouldn't use carb cleaner. Carb cleaner and plastic=meltdown in some cases. Just use some OrangeBrite degreaser and a shop towel if you wanna clean her up. And as for the puke bottle, it is located just to the right and a little above the harmonic balancer facing the front of the truck. It has a 1/2'' hose feeding into the top of it where the cap screws on. The bottle is held on by a 10mm nut attached to a braket the bottle slips through. I always just remove the bottle and bracket as a whole (a lot easier!). Just take the assembly off, drain and put it back on. Shouldn't take more than about 5 min. start to finish.
I put 80k miles on my 2001. I emptied it once after about 10k miles. Nothing was in it. The brilliant engineers drilled a bunch of holes in it, rendering the bottle useless. Never touched it again, and no problems at all.
Emptying it IS a MESSY job though, wear rubber gloves if you have some.

Most of the 98.5s and 99s I've seen have them. For those that do, the bottle should be in the same spot. By the way, I have seen some of the clamps that hold the bottle break = no more puke bottle, just a lonely hose hanging.
The bottle is a standard laboratory bottle with some holes punched in it to allow crankcase vapors to escape. It is made of black polyethylene, so your cleaner shouldn't hurt it. But don't just clean the bottle. Pull the radiator and clean out the crap you ARE going to find on it. Then relocate the bottle to catch the drips and not let them be blown onto the radiator any more.
The nut for the bottle is easy to access from under the truck. The hose just slip fits in the screw-on top.
FWIW, I placed coarse steel wool in my bottle, theory being a cleaner vapor would emit through the factory holes. I routinely get about 1 tbsp in the bottom of the bottle during a 5K mile interval.

Does anyone have a picture of this thing? I have been trying to find a leak and figure out what is spewing crap all over my engine compartment and all over all the steering crap. there is a black tube that hangs down towards the midtop of the right side of the engine if you are standing in front of the truck.
.....I removed mine and relocated it to the outside of my frame when I bought the truck. There is absolutely NO oil dirt film on my fan or front of engine. Just go wipe your fingers on the backside of your fan (engine OFF please...) and see what you find. Most guys I have coming in requesting a thermostat change don't get one. They get this repair instead...

As the fan spins it creates a vortex and unfortunately it carries that oil vapor forward and back through the rad fins. Of course over time it collects dirt and the process continues. I use degreaser and a power washer and then a final coating of wheel acid and a rinse. They come out like new and the "getting hot pulling grades" is no more. It's at this time you either eliminate the bottle and extend the breather hose below the fan shroud, or relocate the bottle like I did. (pict of my bottle in my gallery)
