Checking fuel pressure
Checking fuel pressure
I'm looking at a 2000 truck tomorrow , Everyone tells me that I need to check the fuel pressure on it, I have no way of having it looked at by a mechanic, but I due have the ability to check the pressure my self if some one can tell me where to check it at and the size of the fittings. I thought I would pick up an inexpensive autometer gauge and plumb it in to check it. An what tools I will need please. Hope this isn't too much to ask. Thetruck has 250,000 plus and about 130,000 on the engine. It is about 3 hrs from where I live, Thanks for any help. I'll be checking back all day
I just wanted to know if the fuel pump was working or not, so I pushed up on the round fuel/water drain tap located on the bottom of the fuel filter, with the engine idling. When I pushed it up slightly, the fuel came spurting out rhythmically, about 2-3 squirts/sec. Seemed to be under considerable pressure, so I guess that means it is at least working. Am I right in this?

Buy a fuel injection tester guage from pep boys. probably about $50..... Good investment if you're own a cummins anyways. Get the one that has a shrader valve adapter on the end of the hose. So all you have too do is spin off the cap on the inlet hose to the VP44, screw in the guage and fire up the truck.

Here's a question: Is there a difference between a diesel fuel tester and a gas tester? Was looking at buying one at Kragens for $45 but wasn't sure if there was a difference or not. Also...is a shrader valve adapter the spring-loaded sliding kind? I'm having problems with my truck dying when I shift into gear and my DTC says it's a fuel injector pump failure...but the truck runs fine when I'm driving and all...just dies when I go from park to any gear...and not every time, either. I'm hoping it's just the lift pump. I already replaced the filter.

No diff between gas and diesel pressure testers. I have a snap-on gauge that I've used on my BBC jet boat and on my CTD.
