Changing a rear rotor on a 1tonn dually
Changing a rear rotor on a 1tonn dually
hey yall, havent been on here in a while, but im changin the left rear rotor on my dually. i pulled the axel shaft out. the quest i had was once i get the nut off that holds the hub on, and take the rotor off. where do i go from here. is it really that simple of just repacking the bearings and related parts. i was thinking of not goin with putting new bearings on for several reasons? 1. wud putting new axle bearings make that side wear different then the rear passenger side? 2. i dont really have all that much time to do the other side(only vehicle me and the ole lady share). wud i be ok with just cleaning everything back up and repacking the older bearings. im not worried about the price of them.
the other thing that sucked was that not one parts store between wilmington and moorehead city had a hub for a dually. they had them for non dual rear axles. i checked with napa, advanced, oreilly, autozone, carquest, etc. i got one ordered from a mechanic shop down the street from me. i couldnt believe that not one of those parts stores could get one for me. it would seem like that would be something they be able to oder.
any input would be appreciated. thanks jimmy

never mind guys, found a diy post from totally rad on here. his truck is the newer body style, and there were some small differences on how the axle is held on the axle tube, and the way it is designed, but its basically the same thing. and i found out that the bearings arent packed with grease, but are oil bath type bearings; they get their lubircation from the oil in the differential. thanks for the awesome post totally rad. very informative. the only thing that ill need is that socket to get that nut off which ill be able to get from the mechanic shop down the street from me. they said that theyll loan it to me. this site is awesome. once again, thank yall for the awesome site!! the best diesel site ive seen on the internet!!!

you were right on that one. i sprayed them down with wd40 3 times, and still broke a regular socket on them using the breaker bar. used a air ratchet socket and got them loose. got everything back together except the $9 axle shaft gasket. had to get it from dodge. will be here tomorrow am. after that then just bleeding the brakes down and all set. was somewhat nervous at first, but now realize how simple it realy is.
o man i did that on my 05 4x4 dually both sides. i thought no big deal i can do it in a few hrs well it took me all day i had no clue what i was getting in to. i had no idea the whole axel shaft had to come out with the barrings and all the works. but i got it all back together and save a good pice of $$ i think i did both sides for $240 not bad. i know how to do it now and i will always do it my self on that part now. (its easy like eating a cupcake) lol
