When I got mine it was full to hole from the dealer...
Most all mechanics fill to the bottom of the hole, it's been this way for years. It's always seemed silly to me that the earlier Danas level were supposed to be below the hole. Perhaps this is why our trucks are so prone to axle leaks compared to others and also the reason the hole was lowered later.
I've found it best to follow the specs that the manufacturers state for oil levels and types, it's in their best interest that the product lasts as long as possible.
Read your manual.

If you have access to a jack, I would jack up each side of the axle, one at a time, to try and get all the fluid out. The more you can get out the better.

Does the manual recommend anything when changing from a 70W-90 to a 75W-140 or vica-versa?

Some OEMs requires a fill, flush, & re-fill because the lubes are not compatable.

BTW, mine leaked from the pinion seal after over filling. Once down to the "find it with the pinky" level, the pinion seal is fine.

I've never read anything about flushing it but would at least jack each side separately to drain oil to the middle then wipe up the excess oil that doesn't drain out with a rag.
