Changing out VP44s tomorrow and....

My new injection pump will be here in the morning and my question is: How can I get the pump gear off easily? I do not have a pump gear puller and I know that will make it easy, but I'm on a tight budget right now. So do yall have any tips on getting that gear off with out the puller?

go to your local parts store and rent one, or buy a cheap one for like $10 or you can make one in about 30 min. if you have a welder

I don't have access to a welder, but an O'reilys or autozone should have a pump gear puller? Am I looking for a specific one or are they all the same? Reason I'm asking is that the closets auto parts store is like 30 minutes away.

Thanks for the help guys!

Oh and also, what do I need to watch out for when changing this thing out? I was told that the "key" needs to be in the up postion or if its not my timing will be screwed up. Is there anywhere online that has pictures on how to swap it out? I don't have my hanes manual with me.

I saw a picture of a guy that used the lifting ring from the rear of the head and a couple deep sockets. Clever. You have to take it off anyway. I used a $7 straight steering wheel puller and 2 of the intake air horn bolts ..works great.

Where did you pick up the steering wheel puller?

I just got back from Autozone and they didn't have a gear pump puller.

I replace mine a month ago I just used a small steering wheel puller like bentwings said. I bought mine at O'Reilys for like 20 bucks. What ever you do is don't DROP the washer down the front of the motor.

Not what you want to hear, but it is my suggestion to get the crankshaft barring tool and the trick little puller that Blue Chip has.

There is too much that could go wrong if you drop the woodruff key in the timing case.

My swap was quick and painless.

just make sure the keyway is in the twelve o'clock position and you will be fine. as far as buying a barring tool I'd say skip it and just use the alternator nut... easy

Wow. lol Now I'm starting to get a little worried about doing this. I may just hold off and order a puller and just change it out this weekend, plus I'll have my hanes manual with me. I'm not sure how much it's gonna help because I've never read up on changing a VP in it. Does anyone know where I can find some step by step literature on changing it? I'd rather be SAFE than sorry!

Alternator nut? Lord I feel like such a Newbie right now. lol How do I use the alternator nut? I'm sorry for the lame newb questions.... My luck has just been terrible with my truck for the past 3 months and I don't wanna screw up. Oh and that reminds me I've been hearing some kinda popping noise coming from some where under the truck, but I haven't been able to look into it yet.

the alternator nut can be used to turn the engine over I believe its like an inch or something.. using a breaker bar you can turn the engine counter clockwise
