Changing fluid nv5600

My fathers wants to change the fluid in his 6 speed, He said that he looked under the truck but did not see a drain plug for it. I have not had a chance to get over and look at it. He wants to know how to change it, where the plug is if there is one and what is the best way to do it. What kind of amsoil should he run in it? Thanks for the help

My buddy went and popped the driver's side PTO cover off of it and drained it that way. When you refill it, pull the top shifter off and add an extra qt on top of the recommend amount. A lot of sources are saying that the factory fill level isn't enough.

drain plug is a 17mm hex key. i bought mine from sears, about $10. fill through the pto covers. most of us reinstall all of the bolts except the top one, and add an additional quart. do a search and you will find tons of info on it.

When he looked underneath he said he saw a plate cover, which i am assuming is the PTO cover. What do you mean by pulling of the top shifter? Thanks

if you take the center console up, you can remove the top portion around the shifter and pour it in that way.

Ok, pull ONE bolt out of the bottom of the PTO cover, thats the 17mm head mentioned. The oil will drain out the single bolt hole.

On my '02 the 17mm plug is the fill plug on the upper right side of the tranny. Pull one of the bottom PTO cover bolts to drain
the thing. Better yet take off the cover so you can clean the bottom and inspect for debris. There may be a magnet in the bottom to collect metalic particles. If you don't want to pull the top cover you can still get some extra oil in by jacking up the drivers side of the truck when filling.

Is there any sort of filter with these things, or is it just a magnet like with the diff covers? Thanks

No filter and yes, there is a magnet inside. Clean it off real good, reinstall the PTO cover and fill 'er up.

Magnet

CTD,

When I changed the oil in mine this spring, the magnet is a real flat piece, about 2X3 inches? I was expecting something "taller"??? Oh well. I put AMSOIL Manual Synchromesh Trans Fluid (5W-30) in mine, and so far, like it. I only went as high as the 17mm filler plug though, at the time, I didn't know about adding a quart or 2 extra through the shifter, and haven't had/taken time to do that yet.

genos sells a filter kit and also a cooler kit. neither can be used together. I have the filter kit, but will remove it in favor of the coolers at the next trans oil change.

filter vs cooler

Why not leave the filter on one side, and just add "1/2 the cooler kit" to the other side? That way, you'd still have the filter, plus a little bit of cooling action as well?
