Angry came home only to hear a knocking noise

ok, here's the story;
we were on the way home from the last camping trip of the year and the trip was awesome we had a really good time. well anyway after we pulled the last mountain we were kinda coasting down the backside and the wife went to change the cd and during the silence in the cab she ask's "what's that noise?" i say what noise and she replies that noise, that ticking noise. so i listen and yes i hear it now. first thought was an injector. by the time we got to the next town about ten miles it was not ticking anymore. it was KNOCKING we were still about 50 miles from home so i did the only thing i could and kept on truckin' when we got home it was a bit louder. a couple folks i talked to siad the dreaded rod bearing. man i hope not.
i have an extended warranty and i hope it will be covered.
next move is to call the warranty company and find out if i can take to any shop i want. if so i would really like to take to my local cummins shop.
any thoughts?

Do you have any gauges? Sounds like it may have gotten to hot on the EGT's and cooked #6.

no guages and i know i should but none the less. when i pull a hill i do keep an eye on the stock temp gauge and i have never seen it go over about 200-210ish. i really don't care as long as it gets covered under the warranty. which luckily runs out in about another 5k miles. thanks for the reply. how are those stripped tranny bolts holding up? heli coils are really easy to do.

On my 01.5 before exhaust and before the Van Aaken I just had a pyro and my exhaust pulling a hill would venture over in the 1300ish range and the water temp would never budge off 200 mark. So its very possible you got way hot. This was with the pyro before the turbo in the manifold close to the sixth cylinder too

If the crank ain't in to bad a shape and everything's good they'll probably just slap a new bearing in and say good to go.

Stripped pan bolts are doing great. No leaks. I figure that with 20 other's in there what's one or two gonna do.

keep on driving it, it'll only get louder!!!! LOL had a buddy who had a slight tick that turned into a slight knock, then went on to sound like a thrashing machine, he just kept on running it until it got unbearable, he kept telling me it was an injector, after a couple months of me telling him it was either #6 or a spun rod bearing, it finally got to the point he took it to a local shop & about $4000 later it's fixed, turned out to be a spun bearing & the head was cracked in 8 places as well, never lost any coolant, but it had cracks between each injector bore & in a couple other spots, I'd guess your's is either a spun bearing or like BigBlue said you may have cooked ol' #6!!!! good luck gettin it back goin'!! I doubt its a rod. You most likely scored a piston on number six hole. With out a pyro you most likely overheated the cylinders. Number 6 is the one to take the hit and thats why you can hear it. I cant believe you would run a bombed motor without guages.

Good luck on the warranty because i honesty believe you will be up for a fight to get it covered.

well been playing phone tag with the dealership all week and finally got the low down on what went wrong and what they are going to do about it.
they will take delivery of another motor on wednesday and try to have the truck back on the raod by next friday.
they told me that the oiler in the 6 hole failed and the piston over heated and basically seized.
the used motor has about 20k less than the one that is comming out. not too sure about how i feel about the used motor idea though.

Yep! My brother bought a 99 and a week before we all were going out of town his tranny went breasts up. The dealer told him his warr. stated used tranny with as many OR less miles would be used. My brother said kiss off and went to see Bill and crew at DTT with no regrets.

IF you buy an extended warrentee you better read the fine print.

Phil

Thats the way used car warrantees are. They will fix your truck but they dont have to fix it as good or better than new.

That why it so common to hear the phrase here...

"I'm my own warranty station"

I'm going to be glad when the last 10K is gone on my warranty... But I've already blown my warranty with a few of my BOMB's and my future BOMB's will...

they told they would short block with new parts but i would need to pay 3k which they say is the difference in cost. if i had the 3k i would more than likely do that.
none the less they are covering my mistake and it will cost me 50 bucks. so i can't complain too much.
i may get lucky and the other motor may actually be in better shape than my old one. i always felt that it was down on power compared to other simular trucks and my mpg sucked.
i still have 5k left on the warranty and they said 6 months on the motor. so i will have about 8 months to run it through it paces before the warranty expires.
once that happens i will need to start a slush fund for future repair's.

Personally I would find a way to get that 3k and go with a reman short block. While it was apart I would also have the head done. Any chance your "new to you" engine is sporting a big "53" on it??
