Buying a Dodge truck (today, .....help!)
Ive been looking at a couple trucks, and Im really thinking about this one. Its an 01, and has 144k miles for $15,500..
Thing is, ... I was talking to this guy, ..He said to stay away from 2000's and 01's, because some of them had a bad batch of engine blocks. He said they have a stamp(casting mark) on the front drivers side, of the block, but he didnt know what number to look out for. Supposed to be a 53, or a 55 .?.?.?
Does anyone know anything about this?
Heres the truck:
Thanks.

it's called a 53 block. they have problems with some cracking. the number 53 will be stamped on the block on the drivers side. mine is a 53 and it is a 99 model. i have over 227,000 miles and no problems. i don't think anyone knows the truth about if a 53 will crack or not. but i have always heard if they do than they will before 100,000 miles. i am not loosing any sleep over mine. good luck and i would buy that truck for 15,500 anyday.
Nice looking truck. Should be a plate or sticker in the glove compartment door that has the gear info. Also delaler can give you a build print out of the vin number. Some will do it for you no charge.
Good luck on the truck.
Good luck on the truck.

Nice looking rig! For gear info look in the glove box . There's a sticker that lists the axles the truck was built with. Also, there should be a metal tab on the diff's cover bolts, look closely, they get hidden by road grime. If not, you can jack the rear and rotate the tire one full turn while counting the driveshaft revs(oldschool way). Both front and rear better match if the same size tires are on it! Good Luck, Kurt

Is it an 01.5 with the rear discs or an early 01 with rear drums?
I have never seen an 01.5 with the 53 but it is possible. Almost all the 98-00 trucks I looked at had a 53 block.
Its on the drivers side, right above the oil pan, and only a few inches from the front of the motor.

You can find the 53 by laying on your back, and look up at the bottom of the oil pan on the drivers side, right inder the injector pump. The #53 will be cast into the block whaere it meets the pan. i have a 53 block, 113K miles and no cracks.
That is a nice looking truck. I'd buy that in a heartbeat. If you do get it, you need to imeadiatly install a fuel pressure gauge so you can see it at all times while driving. The biggest issue they have is the lift pump going out, but the injector pump is strong enough to pull fuel through it from the tank, but the extra work will kill it, and it's about $1500 to replace it.
Search this site for 53 and lift pump and you'll get tons of info on it.

first off, good looking truck. second with it being an auto the diff should be 4:10, and look at the eight number from the right on the vin. if it's a six, like yours is, it's a non HO, if it's a 7 than it's and HO. oh yeah and it's the early 01 so you got the drums
