Break in Procedures
Break in Procedures
The manual to my new truck doesn't really say anything about break in procedures for my engine. Are there any special considerations for what I should be doing to it? Keeping it <70mph? Varying speed on highway? Not idling? Etc? The only thing the manual says is not to tow <500 miles. Many thanks for any input to take care of my new toy.
Apparently this is another "religion" question, like engine oil. Cummins says don't use synthetic for the first 10K to 20K miles, depending on how hard the engine is driven. Some owners disagree.
I say synthetic if you wish at 15K miles, don't tow for the first 1000K, change the oil at 500 miles, 1500 miles, and then every 3000 miles until you hit the synthetic mark. Change the NV5600 tranny fluid between 5K and 6K because it gives off a -lot- of metal particles during break-in, and your synchros will need all the help they can get. Change it again every 25K miles, at least. Change the rear diff. oil for synthetic if it's not already in there, and change the front diff. and transfer case to synthetic, too.
Don't idle for long periods of time, ever, with this diesel. Vary speeds, but the combination street & highway driving should be enough there.
Others may disagree. . . .

They are broke on the bench........if its like any other CTB and thats what i suspect wo knowing the facts......to be saff till you find out the most important thing is you very the load a lot ...light med hard for a little bit ( seat the rings) ....like I said I am sure they did it on the dyno
Someday I'll figure out where we keep getting the 10-20k cummins info from.
From the CUMMINS HOMEPAGE Question #23: " Cummins recommends that you not use synthetic motor oil during the break-in period of 5000-20,000 miles, based on the type of driving, to allow proper seating of the piston rings. Beyond that mileage it is OK to use synthetic oil"
Your owners manual, ON PAGE 65 & 66 "Your Cummins 24 Valve Turbo Diesel does not require a normal break-in period due to its construction. On page 66, During the first 500 miles your new vehicle is driven, do not tow a trailer. Limit your speed to 50 mph during the first 500 miles of towing. Page 66 ...to achieve final finish and fit during the first 6,000 miles. On page 327 under NOTE: The same oil interval is to be followed for synthetic oil as for petroleum base oil."
The Maintenance Schedule, which is 7500 miles for "B" and 15k for "A", unless you have the California engine and then it's 3750 for "B" and 7500k for "A". I do not know about the new 600hp Cummins requirements.
Had dealer do first oil/filter change at 3800 miles and then
I switched mine over at 6800 miles last weekend and the engine at 7100 miles last Thursday (was waiting on filter pkg to arrive from Geno's garage).
It's personal choice...
Here's some links and I don't work for any of these places...just passing info along....

Of course you could always drive down to Norfolk Navy Base and have a pulling contest with one of those nice Arleigh Burke Destroyers....
