Bad Ecm?
Bad Ecm?
I was driving down the interstate today and my truck just shutdown. Checked my gauges and I had 0 fuel press and the lights had gone out on my powermax remote [was on setting 0]. Pulled to the side of the road and everything else was working, tried to restart the engine would roll over but no start. The lift pump was not coming on. Took the key out reinstalled the key and the pump came on [15psi], lights on PM3 came on and started right up. 20mins of run time and 3 or 4 more starts, no problems. All the fuses and relays are good, no loose wires that I can find. I understand the lift pump is controlled ny the ecm, correct? Never had any problems before and it is running fine now but I dont want to worry about this everytime I drive my truck. Has anyone had this happen? and what does a ecm cost? Thanks in advance Tim
Re:Bad Ecm?
I am fairly new to diesel so don't take offense if my answer doesn't make too much sense. This is a common problem I have seen at the shop I work at with the cars we see towed in with no starts or stalling occasionally. In the cars I work on the igniton switch controls what's called the "main relay". This controls fuel pump operation. Sometimes the solder joints on the relay become bad due to vibration, temp changes, etc. and occasionally don't make contact causing fuel pressure to drop off and stall...sometimes they restart right away again and sometimes they don't. The test is usually to check fuel pressure...which yours was at 0psi correct?
My suggestion would be to check if there are any fuel pump relays in the system and I have also heard about one fellow who had a bad connection at his lift pump. It may not hurt to also unplug the connector and check for any signs of moisture or even a bad fitting terminal. (moisture usually shows up as ugly greeen/ blue fuzzy guck!) most relays can be gently taken apart and solder terminals inspected for any hairline cracking around them...if in doubt solder up the joints. If it stalls on you again and you have 0psi fuel pressure try swapping out the fuel pump relay with another one (usually there are several of the same type in the relay box location) and see if that instantly fixes it. Again this is assuming that these diesels use a fuel pump relay, which I would suspect they would.
Again just some advice from a gasser turned Diesel guy and limited knowledge with diesels...so if I'm wrong...sorry just trying to help.

Re:Bad Ecm?
Thanks for the reply, I checked and swapped relays after it happened. I have not been able to replicate the problem. Yesterday I pulled all the grounds and cleaned them I also pulled the ecm and checked the connections and dielectric lubed them all. Code p1693 was stored in ecm [dtc to ecm/pcm] what is dtc? Tim
Re:Bad Ecm?
Yeh, that code was not in my manual either. Looked it up under tech facts on this web page. Problem still has not showed up again, I did a lot testing this weekend with Stamey and put 200 miles on it. Running like a top. Tim
Re:Bad Ecm?
AFAIK the 1693 saysthat an error has been logged in a companion module. (The ECM in this case) If no other code shows up it is possible that the ECM has deleted the logged code as non-critical and intermittant after a number of trouble-free starts.
Edit: All OBD2-codes that start with a 0 are standardized. All codes starting with 1 are depending on the mfg of the vehicle.
