axle hop?

When I have my truck in 4 wheel drive and it starts spinning, (mud, or snow) the axles start hopping. Could this be bad shocks. It will shake the truck something terrible. Thanks.

I think the problem is related to the 4x4 traction...do you have the same prob in 2WD??

this is normal with a U-joint (open knuckle) front end, best not to be hammering on the throttle when trying to do a tight turn. a CV joint front end does not do this because the CV allows for the smooth transmission of power thru its range of motion, its the nature of the beast with a U-joint to fight/resist the movement of the wheels when you turn the steering wheel

and the truck will "hop" if your on the throttle as traction conditions change, this too is normal. remember the TC divides the same power between both diffs and if traction is different at each axel they end up "fighting" each other causing the hop (or axel wrap), as something has to give....or break

Powermad, Thats the drive train fighting its self. It is totally normal not the most healthy but, thats why you r only suposed to use it in slippery conditions. When going striaght all the wheels are traveling the same distance but, when turning you have tires turning traveling shorter distance and longer causing it to bind up. Its kind of like a full posi rear end the inner tire is going to want to turn faster than the outer tire causing the tires to bark or wheel hop because something has to give.

If your truck doesn't do this, start looking for the problem.

This is a good thing to know when test driving a 4x4. Both two jeeps that I test drove had no 4x4 whatsoever. The funny thing is the owners act like they are gutshot and or I'm nuts when I tell them the 4x4 doesn't work. I bought the second one after finding the vac leak. I'll install a posi lok here shortly and be down the road..

Jeep has a few transfer cases that have a viscous coupling in the tranfer case so you don't have binding on dry pavement.Just a heads up

Do you know which ones? When I get my cad to slide over on my YJ with a NP231, it bucks on pavement. My wifes Grand cherokee limited with the QudraTrac II will turn around on a dime with all time 4X4. The Cherokee does make a little bit of "moaning" about 180 thru 360 degrees of turn.
The Jeeps I was refering to were mid 90's Wranglers or YJ's. Thanks for the info.
