auto trans temp
auto trans temp
I just installed an auto trans temp guage and am wondering what would be a normal operating temp, loaded or towing temp and danger zone temp......

Thanks,
Rich
Re:auto trans temp
Rich:

The base temp is according to where you have the sender installed. In the outline or cooler line you should see 130 normal, 160-180 towing; get concerned over 220. From your sig you still have a stock tranny. My stock ran 20 or more deg more than aftermarket. Heavy towing I would see 180-200. Now 150-170. 170 is the max I have seen towing 26K in hill of WVA (I-77) lots of steep hills.

A recent issue of tdr had a scale that began at 175 deg. If you run over that the life of your tranny starts going down hill, and rapidly with any increase in temps. I have seen where the "ideal temp" is 140-160. But mine never runs that high, normally. Hope this helps

george
Re:auto trans temp
I have my guage in the cooler line coming out of the tranny,
pulling 15k in traffic will rise to 185 to 190.
As soon as i get rollling down the highway it will drop to 125 and stay there going up and down hills.
If i have to shift down for a slow down or get off the highway it will rise to about 150 until i hit traffic.
I have never seen 200 so far and i hope i dont.
I have 3 coolers on mine.
The stock one on the side of the block,
The one up front of the radiator,
And the one under the lft side of the bed.
Plenty to kep my tranny nice and cool.
It seems to like that or at least so far.
I change my tranny fluid every 5000 miles and change the filter every 10,000 miles.
This might be over kill but alot cheaper than a tranny.
