ATTEN : clutch guru's

would flywheel thickness affect clutch holding power, say the clutch flywheel was slightly under its minimum spec?

I had to pass two semi's in a row coming home today with little room so I turned up the box and hit and the rpm went up and no forward movement and I don't think the tires spun being the truck never moved to the side or made the usual spinning tire movment. There is no way I could slip a con fe with 450 rwhp, and the only thing I can think of is that my flywheel was ground to slightly less than the minimum spec, I can't recall what it spec'd but I do remeber it was like .015 under roughly. I was going to shim the flywheel up the difference, but the driveline shop said it wouldn't make a differnce, but I am now doubting that decision not to.

what do you guys figure.

I doubt that I'm a guru, but I do know that the clutch bolts to the face of the flywheel, not to the back of it, so thickness won't make any difference. I could see the flywheel possibly heating more under slippage or something, but it shouldn't affect the clutch engagement. I have a sorta similar problem with my South Bend clutch..... sometimes under heavy acceleration it'll slip like crazy - tach winds way up with no increase in speed, and you can hear the engine roar. Next day it'll be fine - solid and tight - maybe for weeks, and many miles, then suddenly one day it'll start slipping again. It's been doing this for 30,000 miles. I dunno.

big.. that i what i was thinking but somtimes it is nice to run it by someone else. Peter went to bat for me a replaced my Con ofe with a Con fe this summer and I have had no slippage with the Con fe until yesterday. It caught me by surprise being it has been a great clutch, hopefull it just had a bad day.

Make sure that your rear main seal isn't leaking and contaminating your disc.

No oilmarks under the truck from the rear main and when I installed the clutch 5ooo km ago it was good with no signs of a leak, being it was replaced approx 15,000 km ago

Don't know if you've changed your setup. (clutch) If your still have a stock clutch, you may just be exceeding its design. I heard they are only good for 650 ft lbs of torque or less. Flippin that box up don't help it.

I am running a south bend Con fe that is spec'd for 550 rwhp so I am overrated on the clutch

i have ahd my two disk eep do this one night to me on the way home from a concert passing some guys on the high way. i called the man who makes them and he told sometimes the clutch button get kinda glazed over after slipping alittle bit but not enough to really grab hard. he told me to launch in in third and really burnish it in. not smoke it but just ride out longer than normal. or power brake it in 4x4 low. i did the launch( it was alot more fun ) i havent had a problem since. just a thought. i have seen him launch his twined dually and slip really hard to make boost with his h4 bottom charge and then roast the duals on it in 4th gear. it was really cool. but it just a thought. hope ya got it fixed for drivable sake! slipping clutches down the road like you did just makes ya cringe. goodluck

I am no expert but I thought if feramic glazed over it was done, plus it would dig into the metal on the clutch assembly and flywheel and destroy it. It has only happened once but I haven't driven it turned up since the slippage occurred.

Two things: Defective product, incorrect installation.

Surfaces either werent cleaned properly or improper torque down.

It has held everything I could throw at it for 5+ months, including towing, if it was imporoperly installed or iproperly torqued it would have showed its face before now.

what ever you do dont go slip it like suggested above. yeah, double disks are designed to take that but not no single disk.

No I only slipped the once bad (3 seconds), and it seems fine unless shifting really fast while turned up then it slips at the start of a shift, I was trying some things today to fault it and I have to put it in gear let it settle for a fraction of a second then hit it for it to hold, if I try to carry boost it will slip, I guess I will be looking at the DD next time, man this truck is a money pit oh well I guess I will be driving miss daisy until this one wears out, sure glad this truck wasn't built for the drag strip. Overall still happy with the clutch though and definatley with South bend and peter, its nice to see a compnay that backs there products like them I would imagine it is really hard to make a clutch perform well in every situation, I was doing some searching and found that gunracer is roughly the same hp as me and when he ran a fe he had the same issue. With the 5th wheel in tow it does well and mine isn't to grabby starting out.
