Another vp44 question
Install is easy to do yourself. Follow directions in FSM. dieseldanmac has vids on youtube.
If your injectors leak at the head, replace orings on injector tubes. Be sure to clean both ends of the tubes and ends of the hard lines with very fine sand paper ie 1000 grit. Better yet, find a chemical to clean or use plastic scrubber that won't erode the steel.

Well, I wanted to purchase the x pump from Blue Chip, but I've got a reputable local diesel shop, that I've dealt with before, who will install a Bosch certified reman with the same warranty as everyone else around, for $1650 out the door. Guess he's gonna get the nod. Just hope the current VP will hang on until next week and not strand me.
Stick with a normal Bosch re-manufactured pump. They have the best reliability and are the cheapest. If you have the tools and a solid day to do it, its not to terribly hard but if you can get it done for that price then go for it. As for your pump, it may last another year or two or a week. Dont know. There is very little protocol with VP's. Just make sure you've exhausted all the options everyones given you because I'm only guessing that you wont be happy to have it still do it after you pay that kinda money.
So things to look for (you've already been told the tell tales and fixes):
Bad crank sensor.
Leak in fuel system.
To much fuel pressure during cranking.
VP computer solder deteriorating and shorting out.
I think thats it. If someone else remembers more then add to the list.

I'm going to drive it home tonight, about 30 miles, let it sit for about 20 minutes, then run water over the VP. If it starts right up, I'm doing the VP, if it cranks longer than usual still, I'll probably replace the crank sensor. I'm also going to check fuel lines again for leaks. I'll let you all know what happens.
Well, I feel like I confirmed my fears last night. Drove the goat home, let it set and percolate for about 20 mins. then went out and tried to start. Cranked 6-7 times then fired. Shut it off, got the garden hose and cooled down the VP for 3-4 minutes. Got back in and it fired after barely 1 crank. Looks like it's IP time. Thanks for all the help on here with other things to test.

Shop could order part online & charge an extra $100 & save you $300 (or more).
Perhaps someone will install parts you buy. Actually, VPs can be bought for less if you search a little online. $1400 is over priced by $400 including shipping on new part and core. Install takes 4 hrs so you over paying by the labor amount. ANY competent mechanic could do the install in that time even if they work on gassers & have never done it before. Videos are on youtube which match the directions in the FSM.
