Another transmission question!!!

Hey there guys, I'm new here and new to the CTD. I just got rid of my first diesel which was an 08 F250 6.4 turd. There are so many cummins where I live, I got the business from the cummins crowd every time I stopped for fuel, so im proud to be one of you now Anyhow to my question. My 47re has been fine until last week. It sat for about 3 weeks waiting for me to make some new brake lines. Upon completion of that project, the trans starts acting up. Start out in drive- 1st gear pulls great, shifts to 2nd fine, but in 2nd gear it won't get out of its own way. When we finally get up to speed in 2nd, we hit 3rd it pulls like it should, and does great in o.d. If I start out in 1st and shift manually it runs/shifts/pulls like it should. What components in the tranny are locked/unlocked in drive that aren't in manual shift. I did scan for codes with hand held scanner and came up 0. I'm thinking maybe a sticking valve in the valve body? I am a GM trained tech, but I am not a tranny guy. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Every time this comes up it is usually related to electrics.

Start with cleaning up all your grounds and making sure your battery terminals are clean and tight, after that it can be noise coming off your main alternator lead, which can be shielded.

Its free to try and may give results if something more major isn't goin on.

Check your battery voltage right after start up. Old batterys/low voltage can cause head scratchin problems.

Thanks for the replies guys. Unfortunately I have new batteries, have cleaned and greased terminals and wrapped alternator wire with foil tape. The tape did help with the trans hunting gears, but not the lack of power in second gear. I drove it to work this morning and also noticed that if I start in second gear instead of drive on the selector, it pulls great through first and second. I shift manually to drive and it drives like a new truck. But if I come to a stop in drive and do not manually drop into first or second, it will shift 1 to 2 and bog in 2 until it hits 3 and them resume normal operation. Again I am thinking its in the VB, anyone know of any sites that might show a flow chart for the 47re. Or where to get factory service manuals for decent prices. Is it possible the TQ converter is acting screwy in drive, locking up in second gear?

What year is it?

If it's 2000 -2002 you can check codes with the key trick...on/off, on/off, on look at odometer and record.

I would personally start with a fluid/filter change with a band adjustment...and shift kit if you have the time. I'm not an expert but I had problems with a 47RE before! Does kind of sound like something is hanging up if the shift timing is right and works well in all other gears. I've never seen a flow chart for it but I have a service manual for it if you need pressure values for further testing...somewhere in the garage. Good luck.

It's a 2001, no codes show up with key test, no codes with cheapie scanner. I bought the truck in October and was told the tranny was just rebuilt by the dealership I bought it at. It was fine until about 2 weeks ago, I had several rusted brake lines to replace. The truck sat for awhile, when I finished the lines I was surprised by this mystery. I am not a tranny expert either but I fear I may become one with this POS 47re! I will pull the pan and see what's in it Sunday, adjust bands and install a lockup switch I think. It does seem like the t/c is locking up in second. I really need a manual to diagnose this thing, I hate guessing at things I am stupid about. Thanks for your input Gents, I'll keep you posted of any results.

Well all of the above was completed on Sunday with some results. All negative results however. I am wondering if its a trans problem or a turbo problem. What would cause turbo not to produce enough boost, only in second gear or most noticeably anyway? I am at a loss here. I don't have a boost gauge yet and truck is bone stock.

Dumb question but no warranty with that "rebuilt" trans?

It was basically a tail light warranty. I dropped it off at the local diesel performance shop tonite. Need it fixed sooner than later, at least diagnosed "fingers crossed"!

Sounds like a slipping front band. IS the shift from second to third solid or does it seem to lag-shift? That would be a sign of the third gear apply circuit leaking and not releasing the band soon enough. If that has been going on for a while that would explain any band slipping. I think you are looking at a teardown and rebuild.

Sounds like a VP44 issue!
Would you say the throttle is dead? Or lazy?
We call it 'dead pedal' and it is a VP 44 injection pump dieing.

I agree w gorms. If it sat and got any water in the trans it the "glue" that holds the bands on will dissolve in water.

I never posted my results for the trans issue I had, turned out to be some sort of linkage that had come loose external of trans. Second gear was not engaging completely unless you pulled it down into 2 manually. The shop I dropped it off at wanted 2800 to rebuild the trans again. I called the dealer I bought it from and the owner went and picked the truck up and took it to another shop that he used on a regular basis. A test drive and 20 minutes later and it was fixed. I've put 5K miles on it so far and no issues.
