I think that would be a great idea to document how many people have replaced there VP44 pump and bring it to cummins and dodge's attention. I am with Pappy on this one too...

Could we just get a thread that users could come in and vote

a simple yes or no and have a option to input there mileage that there VP44 went out? And if they have replaced multiple ones on the same vehicle?

I will keep my paper work for this pump tp show them. This is the 2nd pump in a 155,000 miles. Oh yeah just off warranty of course! That is typical DC bull to tell you its a "misprint"! It is then "misprinted " in every manual for years and years!! I think we should all send a letter to that tv station and complain!! They would be astonished to say the least of the problem we have!!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but { they } Cummings , dodge , ain't going to do EDIT about a truck that is 4 to 5 years old unless that IP falls off and hurts some LITTLE KID , Ive got got one and it probably needs a IP right now { last one was 30,000 miles ago } so if anybody gets a class action lawsuit going count me in otherwise when i get the bucks this Dodge is leaving here.

Anyways $1600, alot of sweat, a little blood and a fridge of beer later my truck runs again. I got the new pump back in it tonight that was a piece of cake it took me under 2 hours to get everything buttoned back up and get it running. I took it for a drive and its running alot stronger than before and getting better mileage too.
Miss print??? Yes I got that one too. Also she told me and I quote "We don't know that the book you have is for your truck." Well DAAAAAA, 2001 is 2001, don't matter what truck it came out of. For it being a miss print, check out Cummins own website, it tells ya the very same thing. Hmmmm maybe they had the same publisher.

all you have to do is count how many cummins were sold with the vp44

Of course DC disputes this saying the 5 yr. 100,000 started when I bought the truck. Not what the book says. Have sent all my info to a local TV station. They called me today and said they was interested in my case and would be calling me back next week. Will keep you all informed of my progress.
Well, WFMY TV was definitely no help at all. The women called DC and she caved in to their explanation that the 3 yr basic was included in the 5 years, not that the 5 years started at the end to the 3 yr. basic. So I gonna bite the bullet and go back to an attorney I've talked to and even if I just break even, I'm gonna for it. Getting appointment for next week. He very interested in the case and said he'd work with me. We'll just have to wait and see, will keep ya posted.

A little perspective

FWIW guys,
For evey person on these forums there are probably 1000s of happy campers out there running along with very few problems. Do lift pumps fail? Yes sometimes they do. So do automotive fuel pumps and IPs and supply pumps for other diesels. The guy in the next office from mine had a IP failure in his powerstroke with less miles than are on my 98 Dodge. I did have an IP (VP44) failure on mine caused by the lift pump at 250K miles. The best thing you can do if you have a VP44 truck is get a low pressure light. Changing your fuel filter regularly won't hurt either. Don't think that Dodge is the only company that has injector pump problems. If I get another 250K efore the next one I'm OK with it. If it fails next week then I'll get back to ya.

Mine was all stock from day 1 to now. presently 250K miles. Running again after I changed the VP44 still stock, but with low fuel pressure light. (light kit 65-85bucks from a dealer near you) BD in Canada sells their kit from the web site. If you don't hotrod the truck the stock parts work fine, unless the lift pump fails. So run the light and if it ever comes on stop! There are a bunch of aftermarket pumps, from FASS on down. The local rebuilder here (in Oakland Ca.) Says they like the standard Carter pump the best. I asked if they would warranty my new VP44 if I ran that pump and they said yes, if I ran the low pressure light. Their claim is the VP is fine if always supplied 5 psi fuel pressure, but ALWAYS supplied 5 psi.

Okay guys, I talk with my attorney today and he says I have a good claim against DC. If there are any other's here in NC or surrounding areas that have the same issues with DC and would like to talk with this attorney, you can PM me and I'll give you his name and number.

6speedcowboy has the right idea on his signature. Put on your signature if you have changed or 'when' you changed your VP44 I am going to start a new link. eg VP44 @ 89,000 miles
