acceleration problem. Please Help!
I have an '02 24 valve diesel auto that has a few miles on it (103768) to be exact. A few days ago I was going over a bridge when I noticed a lack of acceleration when I pressed the pedal. I pressed harder and still nothing. I backed of the accelerator and then pressed it again and all was fine. Except I was still concerned about this. I've been paying more attention to it over the last few days. Although it does not do it all the time it has happened a few more times. It does not do it from a dead stop. Once I've held a steady speed for atleast a minute or so and I try to speed up is when it happens. At times if I'm really paying attention to it I notice a slight resistance and then if I press the pedal to speed up I get no acceleration. It will hold the same speed it just will not increase in speed. If I continue to press the pedal for a few seconds it will get a sudden burst of acceleration. If you let off the pedal for a second it is fine again and the accelerations work as normal. Although this does not happen all the time I can almost be guaranteed it will happen atleast once during the day.
Any ideas?

First off, welcome to the site.
Stand by to learn more about your truck then you ever wanted to know.
Could be the APPS (Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor), there are a couple methods of resetting,
one here https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1
it isn't a reset per se, but marks the dead spots so it will ignore them in the future.
There is another one that requires a multimeter and taking the APPS apart, a search for "APPS Reset" might turn up the steps.
Or, worse case scenario, it could be the VP44 going bad.
A search for "Dead Peddle" will turn up a lot of good reading.

Welcome to DTR, its an amazing resource of information. If you have access to an OBD II code reader, find out if the ECU is kicking out any codes. There is also the "key on and off three times" that will show codes on your odometer. The P0216 code denotes a failing VP44- the injection pump. The VP44 dies due to the failure of the lift pump, which is mounted on the side of the engine. The VP44 requires fuel for lubrication and cooling. and when the lift pump fails, the VP44 usually follows. My 02 has 111K and I am having the same symptoms as you. I would try the APPS re-boot and see if it works. I am planning on relocating the LP to the frame next to the fuel tank using a Vulcan kit, and also installing a fuel pressure gauge to keep an eye on the lift pump. Good luck with your '02! Being a tractor-trailer driver for 30 years, I wanted a Dodge Cummins for so long and now I am happy to own one.
I recently had the same problem on my '02. I checked the codes using the "key trick" and I got a code of P0121(TP Sensor Voltage does not agree with MAP). This is the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor code. I tried the reset. It didn't work, the problem only got worse. I picked a new sensor up on ebay for $160 and my wife actually replaced it and she is definitely not a mechanic.
Incidentally, the "key trick" is turning the key to run (not start) and back to off three times. Watch the digital odometer on the third time and it will show the codes. P1693 is not an error code.
Good Luck.

I've got an '02 5spd doing EXACTLY as you describe. I'm not getting any of the bucking or smoking others describe but I do have the p0216 code for a dying injector pump. I'm sure this isn't encouraging, but I bet we're both about to be the proud owners of a new VP44!
I tried the APPS reset and NO DICE- I'm still getting the dead pedal when its not warmed up or driven on hills. I discovered how to drive it like this, by backing off of the accelerator and watching the R's drop to 1K, I can then hit the pedal again and she goes back to running normal (until the next hill or slower speed) I can hear the LP working, but I have a new one and a Vulcan kit on standby when the VP finally craps the bed. It may be Russian Roulette to some, but my Ace in the hole is that my job is driving a Landoll 48' tilt flatbed, so whereever she dies, I can retrieve her.
i wish you had gauges.. so we could get fuel preassure... if it is only doing it when under a load it might be worn bores on your valve body or slipping disk in your overdrive... does it only do it in certain gears??? have to tried to see if it does it if the overdrive is off...

I guess I can't fight the inevitable. The dreaded P0216 keeps coming back after I clear the code with my Scanguage. So I went ahead and ordered the VP44 from Midwest. I like the price- $1046 and there is no core charge unless you dont send it back within 30 days. AND they pay shipping both ways. They also have a deal for $1200, where they include a new LP. My mechanic will install everything including an FP guage and the Vulcan kit,
"May your VP44 Live Long and Prosper"

Thanks Scott. Sorry I forgot to mention I do have a new LP to install with the Vulcan kit. Its the retro pump from Cummins with the ability to pass fuel in the event it dies, part number 4932707
