ABS & Brke Light on sub zero ambient temps

My ABS & Brake light came on while driving in -10 to -13 temps( It took about 300 miles). I tried to recycle the ignition a few times to see if it would clear. The lights would come back on right away like there was a hard fault. After sitting a few days and the ambient temp approached 0 the lights went out and have not come back on. When the lights were on my cruise control would work fine. I do not have access to a DRBIII to pull codes, I suppose I will have to go to the dealer for that. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this condition. Looking through the other ABS related posts, nothing seems to be related to cold ambient temps.

Thanks,

You could try the key on/off/on/off/on trick to see if any codes show up in the odometer.

Sometimes they show up, sometimes they don't, worth a shot though.

Sounds like a possible RWSS. When mine was going out my CC and speedo worked fine for quite awhile even with abs and brake lights on.

Thinking out loud here:

When it's that cold, something shrinks just enough to lose contact, once it warms up (if 0 can be considered warm) it makes contact again.

Check the ABS fuses, make sure they are seated well and don't have corrosion on the contacts.

I dropped it off at the dealer this a.m. to have them pull codes (still under warranty), seems like if the lights came on it should have stored a trouble code. Then at least I will narrow down which circuits to scrutinize.

Thanks for the replies.

Turns out the code is a main relay malfunction. The main relay is part of the CAB and since there is no active code they will not replace it. I will have to wait for the next cold snap (won't be long here) to see if it will happen again.

Diesel fitter,

Mine did the exact same thing this morning. -24 on the thermometer, and it did the exact same thing a couple weeks ago at about the same temp.

Funny thing is that the lights came on at the exact same spot. I was coming into work, pulling into a turning lane, applying brakes and the abs and brake light came on.

However, this morning when it did, it my fuel pressure gauge (mechanical) pegged like the lp went into overdrive. It didn't do that before. Not sure about that.

On the bright side, last time when it happened, after work the abs and brake light did not come on again after sitting all day.

I never had this problem last year when it was -40.

I'm starting to think living up here is overrated....

Ben,

Did you pull codes? I never noticed any changes on my fuel pressure guage when the lights came on. I never had this problem last year either but, my truck is not my every day driver (only use when I am pulling my trailer). I will be driving it more in the cold now as I'm reaching 31k (not much warranty left) and would like to get to the bottom of this.

DF,

I checked codes as soon as I pulled into the parking lot. All I got was 0522, 0523, and 0234.

My oil pressure gauge sender (?) took a crap and is getting replaced at the end of the week so that's the 05xx codes.

I have no clue why I got the overboost code. The EZ has been off for a week and I have never taken it above 20lbs. The roads are still too bad to really get into it.

I'll see after work if the lights are off and the fp gauge is back to normal.

ABS codes can only be read with the Crysler DRB III (Diagnostic Readout Box). Sounds like a connection problem or oil pressure sender is causing P0522 & P0523 (Voltage too low & Voltage too high). The P0234 is most likely a problem with the waste gate maybe freezing up in the extreme cold??

I sure wish you knew which codes are stored for your ABS, if the lights came on it should have stored something. If you used the key on key off method that will only pull up OBD II type trouble codes either P0(powertrain) & emmision related DTC's.

Do you have access to a DRBIII? to pull the ABS codes

DF,

The truck goes in at the end of the week to get worked on. I'll tell the service manager what happened and have them pull the codes. Take it from there I guess.....

Ben,

Keep me posted, and best of luck. I will do the same if I come up with anything new.

I also have had the same thing happen to mine although mine is 'older'. I don't understand it either, but once the temps warm some they go out and don't come back on. Never had any problems with the brakes or RWAL with the lights on so I don't worry about it.......................... much.

DF,

After work yesterday the lights were still on. went to the dealer and they put the DRB on it. It pulled codes 65 and 74 both in active and stored. Tech said he never saw those ones before but they'll have something figured out by the time it comes in.

So, it goes back in at the end of the week. Funny thing is after the dealer went to a friends shop. When I came out lights were off. Go figure.

This am, same thing again along with increased fp. I've NEVER had that good of fp. Wouldn't pull down past 14 and sits pegged at idle. Truck even sounded different.

The info that I have does not have numbers to go with it just whats below, and as far as I know my code was "Internal CAB Fault/Internal Main Relay " but was not active and the lights of course were not on when I had them pull codes.
