99 won't start

I have a friend with a 99 and her truck won't start. Just cranks, and cranks. I changed the fuel filter and it was black. When i run my fingers thru the filter it was oily. Also, lots of gooy gunk in the cannister. Got it cleaned out and put new filter in. Still won't start. I didn't think it would. I now suspect a bad lift pump. It has 217,000 miles and not sure how old the pump is. She bought the truck used. How do you check fuel pressure at the lift pump? Will any guage work?

Thanks!

Mine is an 2002. I have my old lift pump, from when I installed my FASS. It will work on hers, right?

I believe the LP will interchange if they are both mounted on the engine type. If you replaced the filter, unless you topped up the filter housing there is lots of air in there. I believe on the 99 you have a plug you can remove, to purge air. Bump the starter letting the LP run until only fuel comes out. once you have fuel there, tighten it up then loosen injectors 2 of the first 3, crank it over till you see some fuel, tighten the lines and it "should" start.

so did the truck just die or was it working before you changed the filter??

It was not running before I changed the filter. I filled the cannister up with clean diesel and put it back on.

Was hard to start that morning. Got home and parked it. The next morning went to go to work and no start. I am pretty sure it's the lift pump.
