99 CTD cutting out?
99 CTD cutting out?
Ok so i picked up my new to me 99 CTD. I new it had some kind of sensor problem BUT it kind of is annoying to have a new truck that is cutting out here is what is happening. As i was driving down the highway at about 60mph the thing stumbled and the pedal kind of went dead IE no response from the pedal. So i let off completely and shifted out of gear and then back in and it was fine except now the check engine light was on. Ok i knew that the check engine light was coming on. So i continue driving no problems and so on and so forth. Well it has now done it to me about 4 times were all of the sudden it acts like the pedal is disconected from the throttle. I let off shift out of gear and back in and it is fine. Now the other werid problem is that i have tried to key the codes out of the engine using the off=on-off-on method with the ignition and it won't work for some rearson
anyway i knew it needed a new sensor or something but it kind of pisses me off that i can't get the computer to read the error code to me. I am planning on going to advanced auto and have them read me the code from there OBDII tomorrow. Other than this the truck runs great and we are going to do the oil change and fuel filter on friday.
the truck only has 94.5K on it and is a 99 500 quad cab. Thanks for your help

This seems to be a common problem here lately. You eigther have a bad APPS or a bad injection pump. You can try to reset the APPS, Here is the link https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1
If that doesn't work, good possibility it's the Pump. Did you buy the truck from a dealer? I see you only have 95K on it. The Injection Pump and the Lift Pump are covered to 100K under warrenty.

no i am the 3rd owner and i didn't buy it from a dealer
ok this would really SUCK if it is the injector pump. I will be ****** off. I will try the APPS thing later today. Hopefully it is just that.
if the injector pump was going bad how else could i tell? thanks.

Just got mine out of the shop for what sounds like the same symptoms. According to the shop the error was something like 'accellerator position does not match throttle position' or something goofy like that.. it amounted to them having to replace the APPS. Which according to them has been and is still on 'national backorder', took over a week to locate one for my truck.
I was tooling along about 65 and the cruise dropped out and the pedal was basically dead. Took a few mins to get her to reset so i could get to work and call it in for service.
It was covered by the wrty, so they gave me some rental piece of junk '04 F150 to drive for the week....Triton V-8...what a joke. But alas my baby is back to running.
But from what I was told there have been a LOT of failures for the sensors recently.

Final Got to a store with a reader...neither Advanced auto nor Pep Boys would read it but AutoZone did. Code read out as a P0121 essentialy what dakar said..that the TPS doesn't match the accelorator position...anyway i am going to reset it and call dodge to order one..hopefully i can have it before the hole thing goes down the drain! I need my truck to drive every day! I don't want to be down to the Motorcycle again anytime soon!

well I can confirm the P0121 code pointing to the same problem. That was one of the codes i pulled off the display when mine went down, have them written down at the office, and i really looked for them today...coulldn't find them, but remember that one.
Hope you can find one quickly, but i can't imagine that any harm would come from driving with the dead/failing sensor, just don't rely too heavily on the cruise, mine cut out a couple times.

Hey Stew, my '99 sounds like it is doing exactly the same thing your truck is doing. I have not replaced the APPS because I am confident that it is not the problem. I have done a lot of reading on the and it always seems to point to the VP44 injection pump. I have not replaced mine since it is too costly for me to pry open my wallet. I first replaced the MAP (Manifold Absolute Presure) sensor, and the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor with no change in the problem. I checked my fuel pressure and it was at 6 psi at WOT which is too low to spec. The new lift pump reduced the frequency of my engine loosing power or cutting out considerably, but not completely. This reasured me that it is an injection pump problem.
Honestly, I am waiting to see a few more examples on this site that my problem is the injection pump. Then, I might just use some of my money that is holding up my mattress for a new VP44.
Good luck on finding the cure. Please keep us posted.

I am thinking we have diffrent problems. I am going to get a fuel pressure gauge soon and see how my lift pump is doing... the code the computer read out was P0121...which is a TPS/APPS sensor problem....i will call my dealer tomorrow and see if he has got my new APPS in yet. I plan on taking my old APPS apart and seeing if i can come up with why it has gone bad and if i can fix it somehow. I was also thinking that i maybe able to come up with an alternative/replacemtn that is not 459.00 dollars.

Stew, I hope you are correct. The APPS is at least half the price of a VP44. The APPS does not come apart without distroying it. You will not see any "failed part" since it has no mechanical parts inside. I did not take mine apart but did bring it into work to have our electrical engineer look at it. He assured me that he had NEVER seen this type of switch fail at all.
I still hope you are correct that the APPS is the problem. I would like to see pictures of it apart if you could take some.
Good luck. I am rooting for you!

According the diesel tech that worked on mine when they replaced the APPS, their final determination that it was dead was when it was heated it resulted in a 'open'. Not sure if this means anything since i have no idea how or how high they heated it, but I think i can safely assume the contacts should show a closed circuit of some sort.
