5.9 has crapped out!
Re:5.9 has crapped out!
fitzer,
That's a drag, but I have to agree with Vaughn. Looking @ your sig. it seems that you carry and tow alot of weight. I would never rely on post EGTs when towing. IMO I think you got your monies worth out of that engine. Had it been stock, no Superchip, the motor would have lasted longer.

Dean
But, I still owe more than I could sell it for. By rights though, the Cummins was the last thing I expected to break, I kinda expected trans., or rearend , or something first. O-well, will get her back, and blast down the highway somemore!!
[/quote]

Hey Fitzer, you dont happen to know a guy who does the same thing you do for a living with a red duramax regular cab with a crazy camper contraption in the box do you? I was at the local coffee shop this morning grabbing my morning java and there was a guy with a 2001 duramax with 400k km on it from sask that does the same thing you do. Just came to mind when i read your post...

Good luck with your truck

Jason
Vaghn: I do agree that my temps were at the max, but I don't believe that was the cause. I'd think all six would be pretty much equally damaged, but they're not. The cooling tubes are plugged, #6 being the worst, there's no ifs, ands, or buts, they are. Thanks for the comeback though.

Scubasteve: No, can't say that I know him. Weir:The max I ever pull is around the 12,000 lbs. I know guys say it, but I don't believe the Superchip has anything to do with this type of breakdown. I'm sure it didn't help the situation, but don't think it was the cause.
Re:5.9 has crapped out!
So post analysis what were the cooling tubes plugged with, this may be more the question leading to the answer. If post turbo temps of 1000F is unbelievably damaging don't ever ride in a truck with a 3406 Cat mechanical or a Mack machanical your grey hair will fall out. Fitzer did you check out Cummins ReCon program for a long block with Cummins warranty. PK

What you/we don't really know are what the temps were in each individual cylinder - I would say some were running hotter and some cooler than that. Its easy to believe that all cyl's should be running at the same temps, but thats not always the case. I remember during my Navy days having my folks take meticulous readings on diesel temps, and we had pyro's on each cylinder. As with cyl compression readings, there are acceptable variations between cylinders. Any temps beyond spec would be cause for investigation. Having one pyro downstream of a turbo would never reveal any local cylinder temperature spikes.

P KENNEDY: As of yet, I haven't been able to send the old tubes away to find out. But as soon as I do, and get an answer, I'll definatley post and let everybody know. BULABULA: Ok, I'll accept that #6 got hotter than the other 5. But, is that the symptems of a overheated cylinder? The piston head was still perfect, just the skirts were scored. I must admit, I haven't seen the pistons out of the engine yet, I flew home before it was torn down that far. Even though this whole ordeal SUCKS :'( , I really want to find out what happened. Even if it's my fault, with heat or filter, at least I'd know. ???
Re:5.9 has crapped out!
Fitzer sorry to see you having problems, especially with the Cummins.
Does anyone know if there is a way to check if they are plugged,or do you have to tear the engine down.
I would be down right devistated..

Hope all works out for you..

How about oils could that have had something to do with it??
Re:5.9 has crapped out!
Did a check on the fleetguard/cummins site for product match on oil filters the Mopar number is 05016547AC which cross matches to the fleetguard number LF3959 for those of you running a 2001 24v cummins. Its to late to help now but maybe it will save someone else the grief of a dead cummins.
Re:5.9 has crapped out!
Crap! The local diesel shop sold me an Fleetguard LF3349 to use in my 01. I asked about the difference and they said there was none.
I've got 30 miles on this oil change, do I get this filter out of there NOW!!?

Re:5.9 has crapped out!
rob,
i just called a cummins shop and the 3349 is what they are still recomending. it is also what he recomended for my 03. i used that lf3349 for most of the time i had my 98.5 till i switched over to the synthetic media filter lf3894 stratapore.
acording to genos site3349 is correct for the 12v and3959 is the one for the 24v[non stratapore] lf3972 is nonstatpore for 03 and lf16035 is stratapore for 03 which will work on all b series dodge/cummins
id just leave the 3349 in and chng it to the 3894 at 3k miles if i was u

Re:5.9 has crapped out!
Noobie here, i'm wondering what is suppose to be wrong with the lf3349 filter? Just did my first oil change on my new to me 01 24v, bought the filter at the cummins shop, thought for sure they would sell the right filter, now i'm wondering.
Sorry to hear about your problem fitzer, hope everything works out o.k. for ya

rob
Re:5.9 has crapped out!
HMMMM........an alternative to a Fram.............an old moldy sweat sock would be a major step in the right direction.
Seriously the LF3894 is about the best you can find.
