4X4 Driving in winter

2000 CTD 2500 4x4

I have had the truck for a while and never had the owners manual. I am planning a trip across Nevada, Utah and Wyoming with a car trailer and pulling back a 3/4 ton Suburban. Of course this time of year the weather is very unpredictable. Can someone give me more info about the 4X4 system?
At what speeds can I engage the 4X?
Can I drive down the snow covered freeway in 4 High? If so how fast can I go? What if it is only partly snow covered?
If I only have two tire chains and need to chain up should I put them on the front or the rear?
Any help is appreciated as I want to leave in the morning.

Pretty much any speed, but probably below 60 would be best.

Yes

Use common sense and drive safely
What if it is only partly snow covered?
Ok ,if you do not keep it engaged for long periods on clear, or dry pavement.

I never use chains and you should not need them with the weight of the trailer and Sub. for traction.
Any help is appreciated as I want to leave in the morning.

The how fast part in 4 High was only meant as "Is there a maximum speed to run the 4X4 system" of course common sense and safe driving practices are mandatory. As long as the 4X can be engaged up to 60 I probably won't drive much faster than that anyway while it is engaged..
I am just asking about the chains because of the weight of the Suburban pushing me down Parleys Summit.(A very long and steep grade coming down into Salt Lake City.) Of course I will use trailer brakes but if snow covered and icy they might not be a good idea.

Been there, dont that. In a 18 wheeler though. Most guys will just run one on the drives and what they call a drag chain. (a chain around one of the tires that do the braking on the trailer) This way you will be able to use the trailer brakes, with light gain and the trailer wont wrap around the truck and send you into a spinning world of ticked off you have never been in before. This also prevents the trailer from sliding into the lane next to you AFTER you have stopped . Drive safe, and remember, 95% of the time its the brake pedal that sends you into the ditch. If you start to sway I find that if you are in 4x4, turn the wheel the way the rear of the truck is headed and give it gas, usually the front tires will lock up enough to pull you back straight. Good luck, drivin in that area in a snow storm will bring the toughest drivers down to their knees..

I meant no disrespect, just the question was kind of vague.

I ended up not going on the trip after checking the road reports and forecast. I will wait for another weekend when the roads are good and the weather guessers, I mean forecasters, call for better conditions. Thanks for the responses guys.

If you don't want to go down Parleys summit, take 84 thru the canyon, a little farther, but much easier running. As far as chains go, if you have a lot of weight on the back end, chain rear tires, otherwise chain front tires, but be careful to get chains on good and tight so they don't take out brake lines or wires.

Haha, wow, if I cant pronounce it, I aint buyin it!! Were you get those at?

Ive been up to 80 in 4 wheel; I was puttin along and didnt even realize it until I looked down and saw 80...slowed back down to 60ish or a bit under. It was a little slick and snow covered, but nothin real bad. I just kept in 4 because I figure why risk it? The turbo spools even a little and your hind ends comin around (its happened at 15, 20, 30...if its even wet itll do it)

From an old 4-wheeler. That 4WD is fine for getting you moving on the snow & ice, but stopping is not much different from driving a 2WD. In other words, it'll go, but it won't stop!

My owners manual says 4 high may be engaged at any speed BELOW 55 mph. 4 Low is a whole different story. In 4 high any SAFE speed should be ok.
