Why won't the 4wd disengage sometimes?I've tried it different ways (speeds and stopping)but won't come out of 4wd until it's ready.Any ideas?

 

Are your tires all exactly the same make and size along with being worn equal? Are you doing this on a hard surface such as pavement or hard packed dirt? Is your front and rear gear ratios the same? Any one ot those items will cause a delay in the 4wd dis-engagement.

 

My friend had a problem with his 2000 going in and out of 4wd. It was a vaccum problem on the diff.

 

It won't disengage while on pavement.It worked perfect when I first got the truck.Vaccume leak could be the problem.I'll have to do some checking and I'll post what I find.Thanks for the replies...Frank

 

It tells you in the owners manual not to operate 4 wd on hard pavement just for the reasons you have mentioned. Drive it on a sandy/ loose surface road and see how it works.

 

Don't worry about it. The dash light is controlled by the axle disconnect. Your transfer case is not engaged and won't cause any damage. My '02 without the disconnect runs like that all the time. My '96 would keep the light on until I had made a couple of turns.
