47rh help/info

I picked up a '95 2500 4wd with the v10 and 136,000 miles. Couldn't find any with the diesel in my price range.

Anyway, It's got the 47rh trans. with a few problems. I don't "think" the truck has done much towing based on the crud in the trailer plug. I also don't think the trans has been serviced ever or at least in a very long time.

(1)When I shift thru the gears P-R or to D, or D-R or R-D I have a noticeable lag before the trans grabs. Doesn't matter cold or warm, sitting 5 mins or all nite.

(2)trans shifts fine until warm, after it warms up if I give moderate throttle the truck jumps around and shakes all over. I can push the throttle down prob. 3/4 and keep getting the shuttering and no unlock or downshift. If I stomp on it hard it'll downshift normally and take off, no shuttering. I can take it out of od and get almost the same thing. Not nearly as severe as in od, though. I do hear some sort of noise when it's screwing up, hard to pinpoint the sound, since I just noticed it tonight, kind of a fast rattle or buzz sound when I hit the throttle. Oh yeah, this was at about 55-60 mph.

I suspect the trans/tc is toast. But if this was the trans or converter shouldn't I see something in the tach when this is happening? or does is it just not bad enough yet to show in the tach? The tach is completely smooth.

I have done a fluid/filter change. the old stuff was pretty dirty looking but didn't really smell burnt. There was some metal on the filter, like short small shards of metal, almost like little needles and some metal "dust" in the fluid. Also, replaced the throttle position sensor, and fixed the battery cables, still no change.

So, trans time? or could there be something else going on? I know I'll be needing to do the trans before long.

Thanks In advance,
jeff.

Sounds as though it may be time to do a thorough check over of the trans and have it built a bit stiffer.

The metal shards are what concern me the most, because in conjunction with the shudder, it sounds as though there is a bearing that let go.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Sounds like tranny rebuild time. Replace converter with performance converter if you will be a heavy user. Consider an upgraded VB also.
Part of job is qualifing cooler as clean and fully functional.

Slow engagement sounds like seal issues to me. Shudder sounds like torque converter clutch. I agree, most likely it's time to tear down.
