47RE Trans Problem

Got a problem I hope someone can help me with.
Yesterday all of a sudden, when starting from a stop, the tranny seems like it's starting out in 2nd gear and when at a stop it felt almost like someone bumped the truck from behind. I can use 1st gear if I put the shift lever in 1st, but not if it's in D. All the other shifts feel fine.
Checked for codes but none showed. I did a search and it sounds like it might be either the gov press sensor or gov press solinoid, but thought it should show a code for an electrical problem.
If I replace those parts, do I need to replace both of them, or is it more likely one or the other?
Any ideas?
Thanx

They aren't that expensive, I would do both as you will have to pull the pan anyways.

I want to say sensor! I had that same thing at 20,000 miles on my 02.....but covered by waranttee. It is a fairly common occurance on the 02 autos. It's a minor fix and not an expensive part, if I recall correctly.

Might stop by a dealer/service when you go to order and ask someone, just to be sure. Never had another problem!

I think you are right. If i'm in the tranny, might as well change both I guess. Forgot to post the milage-36000.
Think those parts could be the problem even if no codes showed?

Sounds like a gov sensor/solenoid problem. I would replace both while you are in there. Do a full tranny service including filter and band adjust at the same time. If there is a lot of metal in the pan (fuzz on the magnet is okay), then the problem is more serious. There shouldn't be any clutch material. If you drive it very long doing 2nd gear starts the problem will end up being worse.

I just had the same problem with my 02. The governor pressur sensor and governor pressure solenoid tested good, so they ended up putting in a new valve body. No codes were set, just would not downshift into 1st after stopping.

FYI: I have 46K on my 02.

check your check ***** on the valve body.... there is one on there to prevent it from downshifting so harsh might have flattened it.. but there is like 4 sensors on these trannys and its cheap to replace......
or you can just get a new valve body from tranny shop if there nice for just over 100.00 dollars thats if they dont hike up the price

Called the local Dodge dealership and asked if they stocked the govenor solenoid and gov pressure sensor. He said "oh you want the 2 most replaced parts on that transmission". He said he thought they would solve my problem.
price
govenor solinoid-127.68
govenor pressure sensor-74.68
I've got 4 days off next week, I guess I'll pull off the pan and replace them.
will change filter and fluid and look for clutch material. don't know where else to start.
Thanx guys

4 days is plenty of time. You can swap those parts in an hour if you don't know what you're doing..... about a half hour if do.

I don't know if my dealer ever checked the actaul parts, but I too ended up with a whole new valve body after experiencing these exact symptoms.
I guess I'll never know? What I do know is that they charged me $1,200 to swap the valve body, fluids and gasket.

Just got back from town (live 20 miles away) and have purchased the 2 gov solenoid/sensor parts. Storx, I wish I'd seen your post before I left. Scince I live so far from town will try the parts I have first. If it dosn't solve the problem, it's off to the tranny shop.
Thanx for all the help guys it's appreciated.
