4 10 rear axle
i got into some mud today and noticed that only one wheel was spinning and was wondering if my ltd.slip was working. i think that if its working properly ,the wheel with the weight on it, should be spinning . i changed the diff. oil about 5000km ago and put mobil syn. and that chrysler anti slip stuff
in aswell. what do you guys think. the truck has 65000 km. on it.

frank. I just changed my rear axle fluid to Mobil 1 synthethic also. Before I did, I went down to the Dodge dealer & picked up two of the little bottles of friction modifier just in case it needed it. Changed the fluid, drove her around & no friction modifier needed. Maybe yours didn't need it either. [undecided]

My posi didn't work real well when it was new, and it still doesn't with 14,000 miles. Factory posi-tractions are set up pretty loose, and it's easy for the cummins to overpower the clutches in mud and such. I've had two chevys with posi's and they were the same way. Sometimes you can put on the parking brake a few clicks, and it makes the posi lock up better. I'm going to a detroit locker when i get the money. No worrying about clutches or that posi additive.

I drove my friends 98 12v reg cab 5spd with 70 k on it last week and it had a limilted slip and you could hardley tellit. When we got our 9824v the first thing I noticed wa how tight the Limited alip was. this thang starts chirping tires even if you barely turn the wheel. it has 60k miles on it.
DM01

My truck has the anti crappy slip axle. Pretty much all stock limited slips are junk. If you have one wheel on snow and the other on blacktop usually there isnt enough torque to generate both tires to slip. I am not saying the motor isnt strong enough, I am saying the the tire will slip to easy and it cant load up. If one wheel is higher, like on a curb or rock or something, it will not lock up. They are junk.

MANY of the complaints I see related to poor LS action comes after switching to some brand of synthetic lube.

I switched to synthetic too, and no noise from the differential when turning tight circles - THEN, one day soon after, got one wheel out on a grassy, muddy surface and the other on hard packed dirt - the slick side spun, and the truck just SAT there - my LS was no longer working due to slipperyness of the synthetic lube.

Don't *assume* that simply because you don't get any grabbing or chirping from the rear tires after a lube switch, that all is well - IF your LS action is important to you, CHECK IT! Get one side on a loose surface, the other on a solid one, and start out aggressively to determine if the LS is helping any in poor traction situations, NO, they are NOT "lockers", they are LIMITED slip differentials, but they SHOULD help in a significant way when needed - and most WILL, if proper lube is used.

The LS clutches in our differentials vary CONSIDERABLY from one truck to another, and just because yer bud Joe got good results from "brand A" lube DOES NOT mean YOURS will do the same - ya gotta CHECK IT to make sure - and maybe make adjustments as to what lube will work best in YOUR LS differential!

My LSD works great. 8) It left two nice black marks in the parking lot here at work Saturday night.

You know what! I never noticed how wide 33x12.50's where till I saw the marks on the blacktop.
;D They do make one awesome set of Fish Hooks thought.

I'm sure there is too much Friction Modifier in the diff fluid. Mine was terrible from the factory, but I changed the diff fluid and it's worked great ever since.

DB

Re:4 10 rear axle
My truck is finally due for an oil change. I have not added synthetic to it yet. The reason for two tire on blacktop is that there is enough traction to bind up the clutches. If one wheel was on ice and the other on blacktop, I would almost bet that the one on the ice would be the only one spinning. There is not enough torque load to clutch up.

I have been with one side of my truck off the road is a ditch when it has been muddy and I never had a problem. I mashed it had a little slip and it locked and brought me right out og the ditch.
DM01
Re:4 10 rear axle
I have a 02 2500 4x2 anti spin and it's working great so far.
Dodge tells me the torque is set at factory to 75lbs. You can get them set tighter I was told but would void warrenty. I have always used 80-90 valveoline gear lub. in my last 3 dodge's. I had anti spin in all 3. You can't stand on the gas or they will break loose. I can feel mine work in the snow if i'am turning or going thru snow pushed up at the end of the driveway, just take it easy and you can feel it work. I wouldn'tbe without it.

Waam Holland, Mich.
Mobil selling diesel for 1.49 today
